I originally posted about this in the Intel Mac Mini thread, but it got quickly lost amongst the flood of complaints about the GPU.

If I'm reading things right, the Mini is the first computer to use Frontrow 2.0 - is that correct? If so, do you think the upgrade will be free for MacBook Pro and iMac users, or will recent buyers be shelling out some cash already to get the added features? Will it even be possible for the new Frontrow to run on the computers that came with version 1?

My impression from the keynote was that it is not a Front Row "2.0", it is more of a point upgrade. It is due to be a free download for other users of Front Row 1.0 later this week.

yeah, even on a brand new core duo, it would be faster to go in my movies folder and click a file than browse through front row. it seems to lag a bit.

I thought I read the "2.0" somewhere, but now I can't find it... maybe I made it up. Anyway, thanks everyone!

hmm, this might be a silly question, but I have one of the intel imacs – how will front row be changed with the impending software update?

thanks ~

If it's your only computer - not very much will change. The major feature of the update is the ability to access shared files on other Macs/PCs via Bonjour. In other words, you'll be able to have your mini/iMac/MBP in one room and, so long as it is networked, you'll be able to gain access to your iTunes/iPhoto/iMovie shared files on your Mac (iTunes music on the PC) in the other room (and vice versa).

Front Row depends on Quicktime for video playback right? So Front Row would not be able to play anything I throw at it like VLC does? Things like .ts hdtv, .avi divx, video_ts folders etc.... I would love to use a mini as a media player but would want front row to work on many file types.

Sadly FrontRow does not like working with such file types (in regards to the previous post). For that reason, it isn't practical much at all.

Actually you can share videos through iTunes-- so if a PC has videos shared in iTunes, do you think Front Row can access them from a Mac on the same network? I'd give it a whirl but I'm still waiting for my firs mac (MBP) to arrive.

Has anyone seen an iTunes 6.0.4 update yet?

Just install the plugins for quicktime and WMV and AVI will play fine.

Meaning all machines with built-in infrared receivers?

I could be wrong, but I think if you use your software restore disks to reinstall os x, you can choose to not install Front Row from the custom software install. It's a software package just like the other packages in os x, even if the only way you can use it is by hitting the menu button on your remote. When I reinstalled OS X last week onto my MBP, I really think it was an option in the custom install, but I could be imagining it.

Does anyone know how to "kill" front row so that it isn't sitting in the background waiting for the remote to be pressed? I can imagine that it eats up some measureable (although potentially insignificant) CPU cycles or RAM.

How come you can't 'see' the videos that are in the 'Videos' section of iTunes in Frontrow?
I can see the ones that are located in the 'Movies' folder in my home folder in there,
and I can see (and play) the Video Podcasts, which are in the Music section.

I wish Front Row had a better way to scroll through hundreds of artists. It sucks having to hold that button down for 30 seconds to get what you want. Reminds me of using a Dell DJ.

Perhaps an iPod-style clickwheel?
