So, lately people have been trying to be clever using the strikeout tag in their blogs. They compensate for their lack of skills poor education by using strikeouts to be silly. Ok, I admit that I laughed the first time I saw it. It was cute. The problem is that it's EVERYWHERE now and the joke's soooo over.

Engadget has been doing this for some time. Back when I read their blog, I used to find it pretty irritating too.

This type of wordplay is, to an extent, inspired by postmodern writing. For example, a postmodernist, or someone inspired by that trend in thought, may render the previous sentence thus:

This type of "wordplay" is (to an extent) inspired by txtspk postmodern[ist] writing.

This type of thing gets on my nerves. Scarequotes, parentheses, strikeout, etc., obscurity clarity in language.

I admit to using things like parenthesis where I shouldn't, but this strikeout crap is not funny anymore.

Yes, I am a parenthesis whore. The white and grey text I use is basically an extension of that.

I have often seen strikeout text used as a method of fixing a mistake and leaving the edit in there by way of a strikeout. It shows accountability.

I think from now on whenever I "fix" someone's quote, I'm using strikethrough.

Edit: What the hell is the code for that, [strike]?

It's a useful tool in certain blogs. For example, when talking about the most recent EU constitution treaty happenings. The treaty is simply the rejected constitution by another name (and method), so using a strikethrough in this manner serves to hammer this message home to the readers.

That's what I was implying. Way to beat the hell out of the joke.
I'm surprised you didn't write Trent Reznor, anyway.

I don't mind the practice if it is used sparingly.

All things in moderation.

That's the problem with every good joke; it gets Heath Ledgered.

i.e. killed prematurely because of excess.

That's the wonder of Dick Clark, his jokes never get old.

Well, which is it, then? Obscurity or clarity?

(I too am a parenthesis whore—far too much so, even for my own liking. I’m a scare quotes whore and, especially, an em dash whore, too.)

I was going to say the same thing -- it's just an evolved form of the megadork ^H^H thing.

I sure miss them.
