I'm American... for many generations.

I'm just interested in the perspectives of some of the posts. I know a few, and it appears there are Brits and Canadians who seem very interested in U.S. politics and economics. Seems the Nordics are more interested in sex and music. Americans are really into their cars and games.

I'm Canadian and British and not too interested (anymore) in American politics. I have an uncle who lives in Texas and we sometimes chat about it when he comes up to Toronto but there's so much more interesting things to talk about.

Like rocks (he's a geologist) and sailing.

Whatever led you to that preposterous conclusion?

I'm American... since 1647. Before that English and before that (approx 11th century) Norman. But definitely American.

American of Criollo (Spanish) decent. My Aunt traced our ancestry to the Santa Fe resettlement (1690's) and we have been in NM/AZ ever since. Unlike many Latinos in Phoenix, my parents moved south from northern AZ (St. Johns) where their families lived since they early 1800's, when it was still part of New Spain/Mexico.

Half-polish, half european mongrel with a splash of cherokee thrown in for good measure.

Not that any of that matters, I'm a white American.

So are we talking nationality or ethnicity? My nationality is American, and my family has been American for just over 100 years now. Prior to that we came from Ukraine, back then Russia (the Empire, not the Soviet Union). Of course ethnically we're Jewish which, especially back then and back there, was a very different thing from being Russian/Ukrainian. That's my dad's side anyway. On my mom's side we've been American for about the same amount of time, and prior to that were British mutts (Scottish, English, and Welsh mixed within two generations. No Irish so far as I know.).

Well, I was just nationality originally, but the ethnicity info is very interesting.

As best I can tell, my lineage is Scottish and English. My wife's is German, French and native American.

I have a good friend who's family has always talked about their Cherokee blood a few generations back. He tried one of those $500 DNA tests and it returned as 100% European. His uncles and cousins were furious with him.

I'm American. My family goes WAY back, but I can't recall the exact dates. They came from England, Wales, Scotland, and I think Ireland, along with a few that came from other European countries. Oh, and there are a couple Cherokee in there, some time after the English, Welsh and Scots arrived on this side of the pond.

Until about 15 years ago, I just referred to myself as a "Heinz 57 American," but my father and a few other relatives got interested in genealogy and managed to track stuff back quite a ways. This has helped strengthen my national idendification; two of my forebears were admirals in the U.S. Navy (one in the War of 1812 and the other in the Civil War). My grandfathers both worked in support of the war effort in WWII, with one working in a steel mill and the other with a ship builder.

Born in Germany, raised in the U. S. Parents are German, going back at least 150 years that I know of. Came over in 1953, when I was six.

Born in London, UK. Mother, her parents and their parents were all from London. Father was from Cork, Ireland, as were his parents. He left during the Great Potato Famine of 1962.

American, but with my grandparents on my mother's side from Norway, and my great grandparents on my father's side were from Ireland. My grandparents came over after WWII, my great grandparents came over in the 1920s.

So am I. My family has lived her for over 150 hundred years on both sides of my family (mother and father).
As for my ethnic background, it is mostly Irish with a little English thrown in (possibly some Germanic influence as well).

Half English - father, half American - mother. My mum is of Pennsylvania Dutch origin and even after living in the UK for over 20 years, comes out with the odd weird curse now and again. My father is a model WASP.

Great Potato Famine of 1962. It was virtually impossible to get a McHappy Meal with fries during those dark, sad days. Many Irish said "Feckit, b'gosh an' begorrah! I'm packin' up mae lagerphone an' a headin' tae Blighty!"

Or so I've been told.

Honestly? I have no idea. By adoption I have an Italian last name (one of the big mafia familes, no less) but I have no clue otherwise.

[rant]

This is my big pet peeve on adoption. I have no idea what my medical history is. Did my parents have a family history of diabetes? Cancer? Heart failure? C'mon down and try your luck with medical roulette! It's only life after all!

My wife and I both want to take one of those tests out of curiosity. We're both largely Scottish on our moms' side, from families that traditionally have close ties: she's a MacGregor, I'm a Walker. When the MacGregors were outlawed (seriously, her family has had major problems with this sort of thing both before and after coming to the US...) many of them were adopted into the Walkers, others left the country, others just changed their name. Her particular branch changed their name to Greer than moved to the US, but it would definitely be interesting to trace our Scottish sides back a few generations and see what was going on between our two families back then.

I know what you mean, but one of the only thing I like about my adoptive family is that on my father's side we are descendants of the first settlers.
