I have a nephew that is just starting to mess with IRC. He is 17 and will probably get banned a lot.

I was looking for maybe a list of Internet Etiquette rules, but for the most part all I found was "jokes"

Anyone have said list of do's and don'ts ?

Don't say anything you wouldn't say if you were face to face with the person you're talking to.

Netiquette - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(If anything, a Wikipedia entry should be good for an Internet subject.)

There's also RFC 1855: Netiquette Guidelines.

Thanks! I also found this one. And it's a PDF and easily printed.

http://www.extension.iastate.edu/Pub...ns/PM1789D.pdf

Anyhow, mods can close this if they wish.

And again, thanks.

Why is a list needed? Shouldn't these ideas seem as common sense to most mature adults?

I agree with you there besson.

But a 17 year old AKA Jr in High School isn't really considered a mature adult.

Far from it.

He needs the list believe me.

The OP is talking about someone who obviously isn't too mature, at least online.

Not all 17 year olds are immature. I'd say that type of immaturity at that age is rare. Besides, I was conversing with professionals on usenet (comp.sys.mac.system and comp.sys.mac.advocacy) on computing topics when I was 13.

Of course, I wasn't meaning that someone young could not be mature. If what I said came off that way, I apologize.

No 13 or 17 year old is a "mature adult' however.

And teens being mature is a rarity.

Punctuation is always nice. since this looks really annoying people like me tend to not like reading it it also shows a lack or care or intelligence

Another one is using correct capitalization. Let him know THAT THIS IS CONSIDERED YELLING WHILE ON THE INTERNET.

Proper spelling is a must. Every now and then an abbreviation is ok such as lol etc, but always typing "text speak" can be very aggrivating for some.

Okay, but why would a mature adult need somebody else to come up with a list then?

Not trying to be confrontational, and the question is directed at anybody really...

I mean, these lists just seem like complete common sense to me. It seems like it would be easy to come up with a list of our own.

Never mind, I don't want to get into an argument or debate about this, this simply reflects how I feel about putting together a laundry list of behavior rules of this nature.

There is an increasing prevalence/trend of communicating in this fashion among teens, and young adults even! You're not cool unless you write like that. The whole myspace culture just weirds me out sometimes.

But mad props to Mitchell

I'm sure mad props is only said by old dorks like me, however...

I wanted to give him something to pin up next to his computer to remind him.

Something already together and premade. I guess I could have spent some time and wrote out one for him, but why when it's done for me? The internet is awesome like that.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is besson.

Unless of course this is just the passive aggressive besson coming out again.

Netiquette or no, he’s bound to bump into some IRC channel with a grumpy mod some time and get banned, anyway.

I don’t tend to be particularly offensive (or at least so I like to think), and I’ve been banned plenty of times by channel mods who were just assholes.

Reasons for banning, as they have been relayed to me, have included such apotheoses of eloquence as, “We don’t need no eurofags here”, “No names with weird letters in them” [referring, I assume, to the í in ‘Oisín’], “Don’t start talking to people who don’t aren’t talking to you or don’t know about it”, or just simply, “F*ck off” [odd typos and 1337 spellings have been removed, since they require too much energy to recreate].

ok, basicly:

1. Don't do this: "kernel panic?!?!??!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!". Its just plain wrong.

2. _Don't_ speak in caps.

3. If you are unsure about something, you might say something very stupid, and get very pwned. So, say stuff like that with afaik (as far as I know) or something like this: "Macs come with windows right? i'm not sure"

4. Don't use colours or formatting in your messages.

5. Don't send porn links to people. OR ask for warez.

6. Don't excesively send links of stuff. Unless asked or whatever.

7. Don't paste things with more than 3(ish) lines. If its more than 3 lines, use PHP pastebin - collaborative debugging tool or something.

8. Don't ask for ops.

9. Don't swear excessively.

10. Be nice.

11. Normaly, people don't like status nicks.

Tell him to come on the #macnn server if he's into macs.

Heh I'm a operator at a large IRC channel. Recently picked up the "job". It's amusing I can tell you that.

I just ban for rule violations. People chat begging or looking for cam sex or whatever. I usually post them the rules first before banning them.

It's all fair. When I do ban someone they know why.

my little brother got banned from gameranger because he sweared a lot, acting like a 14 year old. Despite warnings he continued and when he got banned he was so distressed he ran to my mom to ask if I could help him to get the ban lifted. Sorry dude

How old exactly is your little brother? You say he acted like a 14-year-old—I assume I’m to take that to mean that he’s really only eight, right?

What is worse is the bold/color away msgs that promote some lame script.

The "Scoop" script comes to mind.

Your list misses a few important points!

12. Fart as often and as loud as you like to.

13. ...even if your gas is WMD grade.

14. Wanna be naked? Go for it!

15. You like butt plugs? Sit on one while chatting!

16. No need to shower more than once a month.

17. Stick your finger as far up your nose as possible...

18. ...and eat the booger if you like!

19. Burbing? As often and as loud you can do it!

20. ...

I used to like joining IRC channels and acting stupid, much to the chagrin of uptight, anal, ops there where their self esteems often seem to be defined by the amount of power they have. Sometimes I'd have contests with people to see how quickly we could get banned, as long as we didn't offend people or flood the channel or something.

I used to like to ask a million questions and make the worst jokes imaginable.

I'd never do this in normal channels. But we would go into the #KKK and racist ones and harass them.

THE BEST IRC prank (Well one of them) I was apart of was back in 1996 when IRC was really at it's peak. We started a pedophile preteen sex pix channel. We got 4 or 5 eggdrop bots that had .zip files that had different names and sizes etc. We were claiming they were filled with HUGE amounts of underage sex pics. Each zip file was about 100megs. Now you got to remember, back in the day 100m was a lot on a modem. It took awhile to get this file. Esp on a 14.4 or 28.8 modem.

Anyhow these pervs would sit there waiting in anticipation while the download was going on. Asking sick and perverted questions about contents of the .zip file. Like "Any REALLY young girls in here?" "Any animal sex?"

After completion of said file they would unzip it, which took some time too, to find loads and loads of the same old nasty granny pic naked.

We pissed so many pedos off that day. Got most of them glined too.
