I would rule out a software related problem first by jumping on the iMac, shutting down all apps that are using the network, and running a tcpdump to see what packets are leaving the machine. If tcpdump is intimidating to you you could also use Little Snitch.

To run tcpdump, do an ifconfig in your Terminal to list all of your network interfaces, find the one with your LAN IP address, and run:

sudo tcpdump -i en1

where en1 is the name of your interface (en1 is mine).
