bluefire 529 and wlonh,
Thanks for mentioning the possibility of using 8.1 instead of 7.6.x with a Q 650!
Since your posting have been checking the Web
concerning 040 user experience with 8.1. All
the info found was published/posted around the time of its release. The most complete posting found was MacTip#29 by Eric Prentice.
He expresses concern about the move to HFS+.
I have not seen any recent discussion by 040 users of using HFS+ for applications/data, or if a fix has allowed its use for system disk.
Any pointers to recent articles/postings of 8.1 on 68k Macs would be appreciated>
Thanks!

I'm not 100% certain, but I don't think computers running 040 chips can use HFS+ disks... at least as start-up disks. Some one correct me if I'm wrong.
Cheers!

well, that Quadra 840av that i put 8.1 on would not boot from my external HD (HFS+) though it sure did mount it and read and copy data from it, NO problem...
i should mention that my ext. HD has MacOS's 8.0 thru 8.6 installed on its various partitions (and is a SCSI HD)... so it is not like i tried to boot that Quadra using a 'too new' MacOS on my ext. HD

HFS+ can be used with 040s, you just can't boot from them. Why? I dunno. Something to do with the ROM, I guess, although the first PowerPC shipped years before HFS+ did.
