I really doubt they would release them with plastics that mismatched so badly. If its real (and its looks like it may very well be) then its in prototype plastics hence the missing logo. I would expect the drive bays and front bezel to be a closer match in color, translucency and reflectivity on the final product. It would make all the difference in the world. Still can't figure out those drive bays though. Where are the openings? Why have a lid if its slot-loading anyway?

from the best AppleInsider replacement site... ThinkSecret! Now if only they would have a forum area, I'm sure all the refugee AIers would have no probs moving there!

Distributor supplies. A recent poll of Apple hardware supplies at a major distributor yielded results that confirm many recent rumor reports. Supplies of Power Mac G4s are very low (further confirming new models for next week), with the exception of a few G4s with SuperDrive, and a surprisingly large number of 466 MHz Power Mac G4s. Supplies of iMacs are also low, as most have been cleared out in anticipation of next week's iMac update -- the most abundant model seems to be the graphite iMac DV Special Edition. Cubes, as expected, are completely gone. PowerBooks appear to be in relatively strong supply, confirming that a revision is not due until September, and there is no "vendor discontinuation" marking on them. It's interesting to note that supplies of Apple displays are unusually low, but we've been informed that this is due to Apple dumping them into education sales.

Mysterious new iMac model numbers at Micro Center. A source told us that four new iMac model numbers appeared in the Micro Center database yesterday -- M8490, M8582, M8492, and M8546 -- with the prices $1029, $1029, $1329, and $1329, respectively. A few calls by Think Secret staffers to major Mac catalogs yielded no results on those model numbers, but calls to various Micro Center locations across the United States confirmed that iMac units with those SKUs were added to its systems yesterday. However, there are no additional details or specs for those units, at the moment. "Just two different iMacs with two different styles? Is this true?" one user asked. However, we also learned that Micro Center marks up prices $30, making the listed prices $999 and $1299. What does this new listing mean?

NOTE: You might be a die hard mac user if you post a reply in this topic, that suggest that the expo is in less then 24 hours only to find out, it's not for another week when you wake up at 9 AM EST. As a result you start crying, because you have to wait ANOTHER week Just thought I would share how pathetic I am with you.

Good question, but the truth is Apple can do whatever they want weather or not these pictures are fake. They can threaten legal action just by saying they are refrences to unreleased Apple products and are therefore violating trade secrets. This would never hold up in court but nobodys gonna go up against Apple. Perhaps Apple thinks like us and doesn't like how those cases look so don't want bad rumors circulating?

They're probally real though.

Because they probably didn't get it from Apple. Saying Apple made them remove something makes people think it's real.

Regarding the weird drives:

A. If you have a current G3 or G4, open your front bezel and take a look at the CD/DVD drive. You will see (like I am right now) that the tray extends to within 1" of the inside edge of the tower. The upper drive tray in these spy photos is clearly *much* smaller than this. This tray could not possibly hold a standard CD, and it's about four times taller (and beiger (and uglier)) than the current Zip drive slot. I don't know what it's a picture of (the closest thing I can imagine is an old tape drive), but I just doesn't make sense for the top drive on a new G4.

B. Why would you have an ugly slot loading drive covered by a transparent piece of plastic with no slot in it? How about, oh I don't know, just a slot in the front of the computer? What's the point of covering the fronts of the drive bays if you can just look through and see the ugly inner workings?

THE IMAGE FROM SALTYMONKEY.COM IS MINE!

Sorry to yell, but had you looked a page back you would've read my post that someone took my mockup, uploaded it, and sent it out as real.

Not that I care or anything, I just want people to know that is most definately isn't real, nor does it belong to saltymonkey.com.

I'll reiterate my suggestion from AppleInsider that people who design mockups should watermark their images, since it seems like they end up in the most unlikely places, with the most unlikely claims attached to them...

That pic reminds of Bob Carver stereo equipment. That was sweet stuff. Now if they could only find a use for a couple of amp meters on the front, it would be perfect.

I really don't care for an update to the G4 Case, I think the existing case is just about perfect, and it only recently recieved an extra slot.

What we want to see is a big boost to performance, support for faster memory and ATA100 disks and super drives on more models. the last item on the wish list is for a big improvement in the finder in OS X.

I do sorta like the Titanium-esque case just above. It just needs some expansion bays on the face. I'd possibly give it a more rounded top as-well, as it looks a tad "boxy" or flat on top. It beats the other G4 design that's been floating around hands-down.

I mean if they're to change the case they might as well go all-out.

And while they're at it they need go with a full sized expansion bay, not just the crappy "internal zip drive only" size. How about 2 additional Bays like the good old 9600 towers?

I'm just wondering what the slot on the bottom is supposed to represent? Some sort of speaker?

I think this is just a pre-case case. Remember when the iMac first came out? Everyone thought it was a set-top box. Apple even had prototype cases designed like that. Apple is VERY good at throwing us off. Guess we will know in 2 days.

so i guess this topic on whether the off-color, spy pics of the new G4 enclosure are real or photoshopped is moot. Quicksilver is real, much to my disappointment. Oh well, another Macworld, another disappointment...

MacAgent --
SaltyMonkey is my server. I submitted that image to Go2Mac with your name and said it was from the MacNN forums, but he left all that out.
But the letters from Apple are real. I even got one for that image.
I was on vacation and came back to have messages on my machine from Apple's lawyers and this letter in my email:

RE: Notice of Infringement

Dear Jake:

We represent Apple Computer, Inc. ("Apple") with respect to its intellectual
property matters. Recently, it has come to our attention that you are
displaying photos purporting to be depictions of future Apple products on
your web site at <http://www.saltymonkey.com/newg4clear.jpg>.

You should be aware that your display of proprietary and confidential
information regarding Apple's G4 infringes Apple Computer, Inc.'s ("Apple")
intellectual property rights by unlawfully disclosing Apple's trade secrets
and infringing Apple's copyrights in violation of federal law.
Additionally, your actions may also set unfair and unrealistic expectations
of what Apple will deliver to its customers. Moreover, Apple believes that
the person who disclosed the photos to you violated a non-disclosure
agreement with Apple. Since Apple has never authorized the photos to be
disclosed or published, any continued display of the above mentioned
materials could result in you or your company being held liable for
violating Apple's rights.

Consequently, we request that you immediately cease and desist from
displaying the above-referenced material on all web sites and servers under
your control. This includes any hyperlink to other locations where the
material may be available. Additionally, we ask that you confirm in writing
as soon as possible that you have removed the infringing material from your
web site.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Fabricio Vayra
