What has happened to Google? I get the website for "SOGO Search" when I go to http://google.com/. There is some limited info on DNS failure in the brief FAQs section, but nothing else.

First, try typing "http://www.google.com"

SOGO owns the name "www.google.com.net" so when DNS failures occur, browsers start appending ".net," ".com," ".org," etc. to the end of the URL.

If that doesn't work, then try the suggested fix described here.

Well, I am definitely not getting google's web site here. This may be affecting only a portion of the net, but there has to be somebody else out there that's getting the Sogo web site. Accessing google via http://216.239.37.99/ yield's google's web site, but google.com yields the Sogo site.

I used both google.com and your IP address given, and they both work just fine.

I think your browser has been hizjacked? Weird.

It's strange that Safari wouldn't display this, though. The site appeared to be "google.com", not "google.com.net". Anyway, it seems that this was a momentary google lapse my Mac caught, or something along those lines.

Thanks, that worked great! Everything's back to normal here.

Your DNS cache may be either corrupted or "seeded" by an underhanded web site. That's a minor problem though-flush the cache and restart your computer and you should be fine. I've fielded a couple of problems like this in the Networking forum recently...maybe a trend is developing?

Not quite-this can affect other networking programs as well, though it primarily shows up through the browser. And once it's done, it affects ANY browser you might use because they all depend on the OS's networking structure.

And yet again... I'm wondering if this has anything to do with my ISP and the recent "renumbering" they did.

This sounds very much like DNS poisoning; I'm a bit surprised no one has mentioned that possibility. A similar incident with SOGO occurred a couple of months ago. At that time I believe Google blamed a DNS error on their part.

Your ISP's changing DNS servers does sound like a possible cause. Call their tech support folks and chew them out. Or at least ask them for alternates. It is possible to "poison" a lower tier DNS server by giving it incorrect information, but any higher-level server (closer to the authoritative servers) should be able to resist that. In other words, let the ISP know that there's something going on and that you're not getting the service you are paying for.

I want to know why Google is starting to suck ass so much. Type in anything and you'll get like 50,000 stupid advertising sites with no real information. It blows.

Basically, those 50,000 stupid advertising sites have figured out how Google's ranking system works, and have ruined the system for everyone. Google needs to change their system to punish those who would take advantage of their system.

Agreed, ad-spam is pretty annoying.

When I get pilfered with those bastards, I add a "-checkout -shop -buy -store" into the query, and usually get much better results.

I don't know what's going on but I don't like it one bit-- Now I am being regularly redirected from other random sites... for example I type "gamoe.net/Notebook" for my blog and I get redirected to http://www.net.net/search.asp?Keywords=gamoe . Not cool.
