I am having awful performance (really really slow) with iPhoto when I try to view 8 megapixel... is anyone else having this problem? I have an 800mhz Powerbook with 1GB or RAM, which seems like a fast enough computer to simply view images, but maybe it's not...

Hmmm...I don't have any slowdowns with large images. Try deleting the folder: ~/Library/Caches/iPhoto Cache.

Dude...8 megapixels is a lot. I don't think you can expect pictures with that res to fly up on the screen with an 800MHz Powerbook. However, I don't know what 'really really slow' actually means. Can you express it in seconds?

It takes 7 to 8 seconds to open an 8mp photo (time from double clicking to the window opening on the screen), and about 2 seconds to close it (some photos take 5 seconds to close for some reason... they are the same size and resolution as ones that only take 2). Photoshop doesn't have any problems with images this size--no delay, and even if I have a bunch open at once. iPhoto can't even handle one! I don't expect zooming to be fast, I just expect to be able to view the image in less than 7 seconds.

Deleting the cache folder cut most open times to around 4 seconds, which is much better... thanks!

Cool.

Incidentially, I just tried opening an image with a resolution of 2336x3504 in Preview, and my whole computer completely froze after trying for about 10 seconds. Works fine in iPhoto.

You can gain additional performance boosts if you periodically run Cocktail, Onyx or Panther Cache Cleaner to keep the various cache and swap files cleaned out. Also running DeLocalizer to remove unneeded language modules can free up considerable HD space. I recovered 900+MB the first time I ran it. It will run under 10.3.

Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

Meh, its easier for me just to type in the various things into Terminal. Im sorry, but I would never pay for something like Cocktail when I can just input some simple letters and get the same results.

Although, if you like the GUI frontend, by all means go ahead and use it. I dont want to stop you.
