So, is the official story as to why he got fired still the Weiner lappy?

And if so, is there any universe where this was a good time instead of his first week...

Where he even could have tried to spin it as healing the country?

Wait... this is going to seem like I'm making a joke, but I posted the above after taking a nap, and I'm now reading Comey got fired for not "locking her up"?

That's what I was saying before, or at least that's what was being implied.

I'd try to get hired as a consultant then.

My pitch would be "Getting Your Story Straight 101".

My grasp on this was: Trump and the AG were waiting for Comey to carry forward the investigation into HRC's potential crimes, but after months had passed and there was no activity on it, the administration lost patience with him.

Unfortunately for whomever is in charge of strategy, this collides head-on with the "Democrats hate Comey" defense.

No brakes, indeed.

Just to clarify, is that your grasp on the official story or the actual truth?
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Yes, that's what I've seen. They fired him for July and October. Whatever is in the Rosenstein memo, which Trump would have ignored and fired Comey for anyway.

The Rosenstein memo, which I didn't read in full until last night, is all July. I don't think October is mentioned. If it was, it's missable.

AFAICT, the notion that it had anything to do with October is the proximity of Testimony by Comey about October, the "Democrats hate Comey" defense from WH comms, and like a seemingly vain attempt to attribute sanity to the maneuver.

The tape tweet seems like something that come back to bite. Like Al Capone going down for tax evasion, caught lying about a tape would be an odd way to go.

To add, the Inspector General is looking into Comey for those actions. Unless he added to the fire, it makes more sense to wait for his report before making a decision.

Some wonderful context: https://twitter.com/ZekeJMiller/stat...71189230120960

White House says Comey committed “atrocities.” But on Flynn said they didn’t want to smear a good man.

This has gotten surprisingly little play here. Spicer has refused to comment on it two briefing in a row. I see the logic in not telling anyone about it, but the cats out of the bag. Thanks to the President's big mouth, none-the-less.

I'm very curious how the White House will respond if and if they refuse (likely) whether the GOP will have the minerals to subpoena them.

---

The way I'm reading the reporting, it's likely president's ever stopped recording after Nixon, they merely stopped advertising it. Meanwhile we have stories from this and the past administration that point to it occurring, at least in the Oval Office.

To add, I feel like the stage was being set for this last week: The timeline where Yates informed the WH counsel Flynn was under investigation followed by Trumps invitation to Comey for dinner.

That was Comey's last chance to get his shit together and pledge to investigate leaks. He apparently, at best, was non-committal, and Trump decided to fire him.

House and Senate Intelligence have requested Comey memos and Senate offering him to testify in either open or closed session. If there's anything there hopefully we'll know soonish.

I'm late to the party, but Trump's action was indefensible, and mind-numbingly shortsighted. This is one of the issues conservative Never-Trumpers were worried about: childish impulsiveness.

Justin Amash (Republican Congressman) threw out the I-word today. This thing could pick up steam.

Ah, well in my case that's because I didn't know. Was Comey in the FBI previous to his elevation?

I wonder what the timeline on this is. I'm guessing Rosenstein know about the memo earlier than the public. Getting Mueller onboard even in 48 hours seems impressive.

IIUC, Comey was DOJ at the time.

Comey and Muller threatened to resign over putting the screws to Ashcroft.

Right. I guess that probably helped forge a bond.

Also:
Robert Mueller, new special counsel on Russia, has been a law partner at WilmerHale of Jamie Gorelick, who represents Ivanka & Jared.
Christ, everybody's connected to everybody, eh? (I don't think this affects his judgement)

You're on point with the comments tonight.

Speaking of the news, when I got home I thought to myself, "Let's stay off the computer for once. No more news will come out." It was relaxing. I was also wrong.

Yep. Mueller reports what everyone has already been reporting, no there there, then announces he has reviewed the server file case and has referred it to grand jury or has filed charges. Since he is independent of the Trump administration, no stink on their hands.

It'd be amusing if Trump ended up clean but then got screwed on the obstruction of justice charge because he stepped in for Flynn.

The problem is, if he did, Comey had a legal reqirement to report such violation. Comey puts himself in legal jeopardy for not reporting it.

lol someone has been listening to right wing talking points.

I doubt Trump gets a get out of jail free card because Comey didn't report it fast enough.
