I've had quite a few kernel panics in recent weeks. Suspecting a software problem, I did a clean install of Panther (10.3.4) and all my applications on one CPU of my dual processor 1 GHz G4. The kernel panics continued -- sometimes the polite kind that say "You need to restart your computer" but also the ugly kind with dozens of lines of Unix code spewing out over the screen. These happened sporadically, sometime in the middle of a Photoshop edit, but also with NO apps running at all, or just a screensaver. So I figured a hardware problem might be possible.

I took the machine into the Genius Desk of my local Apple Store. I had brought a picture of my monitor while a kernel panic was going on so they could see the codes, hoping they could figure out the problem from those. But they said no, only the engineers at Apple know what the codes mean, and they don't have access to the information. They could only do some trial-and-error tests to replicate a kernel panic. After more than a day of that, I had them replace the processors, which they said might be the most likely source of problems.

I've had the computer back now for a few days and there have been a few system crashes while using Safari and while copying files to my iDisk -- the spinning ball type of crash, not a kernel panic yet, but I'm wary.

Does anybody know of a good reference for kernel panic codes? Thanks in advance.

see if the panics generated a panic.log, if so post it any we'll try to decode it for you.

Also if you want to take a stab at it yourself:

http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2002/tn2063.html

From a glance I would say you would have to run gdb on the backtrace yourself. Only 1 even generated a panic with a .ktext in the backtrace (something to do with your graphics card or driver). Since you have so many panics, I think that might be an isolated KP, so don't focus on the Mon May 24 10:35:46 2004 one.

A lot of Init access errors with backtraces to:

0x0002C490 and 0x02000103 so go after those first.
Now with G5 Power...

Thanks for this advice. I am a lowly graphic designer and don't know much about Unix. To run gdb on the backtrace, would I type something into the terminal? Thanks again.

gdb is gonna be hell to figure out for a newbie, I'd google for kpdecode and try that first.

Okay, here goes...Kpdecode opened Terminal, and this was the result (I just changed my computer name in TextEdit). It is still pretty cryptic to newbie me (who has been buying Macs for the last 12 years has never had to immerse myself in this type of troubleshooting before).

It's cryptic 'cause it couldn't get any info. I'm not sure how to debug a kp like that.

Yikes! That's scary.

I wonder if Kpdecode, a program that was created in January 2003 and was not updated as far as I can tell, recognizes kernel panics in 10.3.4? Or would they always be the same regardless of OS?

this is the problem, i think
Code:
Creating stack map... loading modules and nametables... sh: line 1: nm: command not found
it says it cant find the command nm, which comes with xcode/devtools, so install xcode, and try it again.

it needs nm to extract the symbols, and since nm isnt installed, you get those "Symbol not found" everywhere

If you have an Apple Store near you, take your computer into the Genius Bar, or, print out a copy of those codes and bring that in.

You can also try some basic steps. Reseed everything in your Mac, meaning, unplug all cables, plug them back in, take out the RAM, put it back in nice and firm, PCI & AGP cards, same with the CPU.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Actually, I did what you said. The Genius Bar people at my local Apple Store told me they don't have access to what the codes mean -- that only engineers at Apple know what they mean. I would have thought that people who are asked to repair Macs would be given the codes -- why would this be such a secret?
