I upgraded a friend's blue'n'white G3 from 9.0 to 9.2.2 and found the
Apple DVD Player no longer works. It complains about the necessary
hardware not being present when I try to run it.

The Apple DVD Player version on the box is 1.3, which appears to be correct
since the graphics hardware is PCI based, non-AGP. Getting info for Apple
DVD Player, even though version 1.3, shows the updated info tag "MacOS
9.2.1", so I assume it was laid down by the 9.2.1 installer, which
considered it the safe one. Seeing as Apple DVD Player 2.x requires AGP
graphics, I'm confused as to why the 1.3 version doesn't work.

Anyone know what might be wrong?

I use OS9.2.2 and the version of the most up to date DVD player is 2.7
However if I'm not mistaken, a blue and white iMac does not have a DVD player. Are you sure you have a DVD model iMac?
Sorry if I'm showing my stupidity here, as I am not familiar with "...PCI based, non-AGP."

The box isn't an iMac, but a G3 tower. The graphics card is PCI, not
AGP, hence the "PCI based, non-AGP". DVD Player 2.x should only
work for PowerMacs with AGP based graphics. My friend's G3 has a PCI
non-AGP graphics card, and hence they shouldn't be able to use DVD
Player 2.x, which I confirmed by trying to install and it complained
about the necessary hardware missing.

As a result, DVD Player 1.3 should be the correct version for that
box. However, it complains the necessary hardware is missing. I'm
wondering if anyone else is seeing this with MacOS 9.2.2 with a DVD
player and non-AGP graphics card.

I haven't checked this out fully, but maybe this will help. http://kb ase.info.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/kbase.woa/wa/query?dialogID=&val=DVD&x=17&y=15&type=smartSearch &nodes=&dateModified=&wosid=6VRp639b2tVq2NF1H4k7HZ 4FtJC

On further inspection, I don't think it's any help. You can still get early 2x versions, but 1.3?? I don't know. Sorry I can't help more.

1. downgrade back to OS9 (OS 9.1> needs DVD 2.2 or better and you can't use it)

2. upgrade to OSX and use DVD 3.1.1 (now supports B&W PCI Macs)

3. use one of these patches at Think DVD *do this at your own risk, follow instructions,,,

...good luck
