I've disabled the ads on forums for today. Please let me know if you experience any hangs or crashes on the forums so that we can narrow our search down and pinpoint the problem. Thanks for your help.

I do not use IE, but got curious enough about the mysterious IE-MacNN crash bug to investigate. In the Forum's html, I did spot some oddness in the tags, extra slashes:

OK, I've enabled the ads, but without JavaScript (as of 12:30 PM EST). Please let me know (after some significant time browsing with IE) if you experience any crashes with the ads like this to further pinpoint the location of the problem. End of the day today or tomorrow morning would be good.

Thanks.

Maybe you should put up a banner "Best viewed with anything but IE".

OK. Does the ad get a chance to render, or does it hang before that? It may be a problem of corrupted images (weird, but possible...), and if a lot of people are hanging on the same image, that could be a possibility. Information on which ad it's loading when the page hangs would be very useful.

BTW, the reason I'm asking for all this information is that by some freak chance, none of us have experienced any hangs in IE whatsoever. Not denying that it happens, but certainly making it way harder to track down the cause of the problem.

Thanks for your help.

Gzl: every time it locks up for me, I get the beachball of death before anything loads on the page at all. The progress bar always shows the name of an image loading. It's different each time though. Sometimes it's yellowstars.gif. Sometimes it is someone's signature. So, it sounds more like an image corruption problem. Good luck tracking it down. <img border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" title="" src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" />

I get lock-ups before an image (gif) loads as well.

Doesn't happen in 9 / IE. 5.1.4.

Haven't had any of the freezes today (so far) - did get one yesteday where it seemed to hang on loading bluestar.gif - it had loaded some of the other stuff on the page but hadn't rendered it.

Don't know if this is just a coincidence or not though - twice this evening I've been in The Lounge and clicked refresh and IE has just plain and simple bailed on me "The application Internet Explorer has unexpectedly quit" or something similar.

iBook, Mac OSX 10.1.5, IE 5.1.4

Constant and consistent freezes here for ages now under OS 9 and I.E. 5. I'm on the verge of switching to a different browser, but this is the only place it happens. I have to force quit I.E. continnually during any prolonged sessions here on MacNN.

So what's up? Has anyone been able to trace the problem yet?

Mike

I've not had a single hang caused by MacNN under IE5 on OS9, nor OSX.

Additionally, I've used:

IE5 on 8.6
IE4.5 on 8.6
Chimera on X
Mozilla on X
IE5 on X
Communicator 4.5 on 9
Communicator 4.5 on X via Classic
IE5 on Win98

No crashes on any of them...

No, it's not those images, it hangs on different images each time -- those just happen to be what's in the statusbar, and not what it's actually hanging on.

I've changed something else in the ad code today, please let me know if you experience any crashes/hangs/etc.

thanks

OK, let's try one more thing. If you're using Browser Cache on Internet Explorer, disable it. Clear the cache and set the size to 0 MB. Then browse MacNN for a little while and let me know if it crashes.

Someone suggested on IRC that IE's problems isn't with anything specific on the site, but rather with a more general issue with cached images, and since a lot of people read MacNN throughout the day, the cached image problem shows up a lot more frequently here. It's certainly consistent with my experience, since I don't use browser cache, and I haven't experienced any crashes at all, so I think it's worth trying.

So try that out, browse around for a few hours, and let me know how it went.

Thanks.

I have noticed that quite often one or more graphics in the bottom row of the table containing the navigation tab table and the lower half of the masthead (fellow web designers you know what I mean) fails to load (most often "log-news-bot.gif" or one of the tab graphics). This happened before and continues to happen now. Related? I don't know.
