Engadget feed

Open Handset Alliance

The Google mobile OS has just been announced, I think, I'm not sure. Something just happened anyway, there were these guys on stage, and they announced an OS, but there's no screen shots til next week, no SDK til next week, and no handset til 2008, but at the same time, there will be thousands of Google handsets very soon.

Then there's the site. There are some people talking, and a dog, and another video of kids talking about magic phones.

Is this what it feels like to be on drugs??

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

I just finished reading through the engadget feed. It sounds interesting that they're going to push an open mobile phone OS.

Are they going to release an OS with an SDK which people can use to develop apps? Or is the entire OS going to be 'customizable'? For example, will every phone running this OS look the same, or might Motorola have a different looking UI to a phone from LG?
I think it might be better from a user point of view for it to be a standard UI. One of the issues with mobile phones now-a-days are the terrible UIs.

By the way, who was asking questions?
"What about the GPhone?" "We are not announcing anything today"
"So, that GPhone?"
"How about that GPhone?"
"Is Google announcing a GPhone?"
Jeeez, enough already.

I'm sure Google would too; they'd be tax-exempt.

i will be impressed if this, ultimately, is not about selling ads on a mobile device.

come on google... your business model is getting really really boring.

The answer to this one is probably no, or unknown til next week, but will people be able to download the OS onto their own phone and use it on whatever phone they have? (This might make Motorola phones usable )

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Mobilinux, MOTOMAGX (sic)... plenty of more or less open Linux- based phone operating systems are in the works, but perhaps Google can indeed bring something new to it, most likely nice developer tools. Nokia has issues with Symbian and has openly been experimenting with Linux in its Internet devices (sans phone), so plenty of action there.

User experience- wise, who knows, it'll probably be up to the phone manufacturer to come up with a customized frontend for an OHA product.

Not necessarily. It sounds like it will require particular hardware (not necessarily a particular model, but the phone will have to have certain things in it).
