POPULAR Musician Who's Done Most to Depopularize Religion?
Could it be John Lennon?
From, "Imagine"
Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace
Or is it David Bowie?
From, "Modern Love"
Never gonna fall for
Modern love - walks beside me
Modern love - walks on by
Modern love - gets me to the church on time
Church on time - terrifies me
Church on time - makes me party
Church on time - puts my trust in God and man
God and man - no confessions
God and man - no religion
God and man - dont believe in modern love
This is a thread about anti-religion music and POPULAR musicians NOT about religion and not about Satanic, cult, fringe music and musicians.
The thread will be sent to the PL if you start discussing religion. If that is your desire then start your own PL thread already.
The question here is who is partly to blame/credit for the depopularization of religion in musical culture.
Please cite specifics.

I remember when Madonna's Like A Prayer video came out showing her develop stigmata and had burning crosses, which got a lot of Christians up in arms.
And Marlyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar pissed of the Christians too.
Or Sinead O'Conner when she was on Saturday Night Live when she tore up the photo of the pope.

Lennon said only "imagine" and listed things to imagine about. Bowie, as far as I could tell, was talking about MARRIAGE, not religion. Context is crucial. Neither of the two songs listed is "against" religion, though lots of people thought "Imagine" was-they too didn't bother to listen carefully and actually understand the lyrics.
Oh, and when John said at one point that the Beatles were "more popular than" Christ, there certainly weren't crowds of tens of thousands of people mobbing churches; he was accurate in describing the cult following (mostly of young girls) that the Beatles had attracted. Whether or not he meant something different is something that I don't think we can honestly discuss.

He purposely posted a PWL thread in the Lounge, because he's banned from the PWL.
Mods, please get in on that action.

If you listen to the interview in which John made that famous "more popular than" comment, it's quire obvious that he was he was not bragging about the adulation the Beatles were experiencing. It was more of a comment as to how mixed-up the popular culture was. How out-of-whack people's priorities were. It was more of a criticism than anything else.

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world
You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Yes, it definitely went WAY beyond just the Beatles. I just used the comparison I did as an illustration. The Stones, even Herman's Hermits had that sort of reaction from girls all over the world, (and some boys), while at that time conventional religious observance was undergoing a major change. Again, John was accurate, and while I think he came off as a bit amused by the whole thing, that doesn't change how accurate he was.

Born (The Retribution of Spiritual Sickness) by Nevermore
Religion changed the face of man, thou shalt not kill, we all are gone
The seed of ignorance is born thou shalt not think, thou shalt conform
The pigs order us to follow orders and obey
The flies drink the decaying nectar of their tortured effigy
Cling to wasted beliefs and visions and bathe in apathy again
No solution, the retribution of spiritual sickness begins
The legacy of suffering is through, the guilt we bear shall not tear us in two
Born we are the same, within the silence, indifference be thy name
Torn we walk alone, we sleep in silent shades
The grandeur fades, the meaning never known
If nothing in the world can change our children will inherit nothing
Born we are the same, within the silence, indifference be thy name
Torn we walk alone, we sleep in silent shades
The grandeur fades, the meaning never known
The pigs call for pure submission and fall into the fray
The lonely hunter beats his shallow drum, the soundtrack of world disarray
Cling to wasted beliefs and visions and bathe in apathy again
No solution, the retribution of spiritual sickness begins
Born we are the same, within the silence, indifference be thy name
Torn we walk alone, we sleep in silent shades
The grandeur fades, the meaning never known
If nothing in the world can change our children will inherit nothing
(Lyrics copied and pasted from darklyrics.com so I'm sure there are some mistakes).

If there is a hell, I'll see you there.
Tool - Opiate
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
what you need is someone strong to guide you
However, Tool is a very spiritual band, but I have a sneaking suspicion they don't respect any major organized religion.

You would be 100% correct, Maynard has zero respect for most organized religions. OTOH, he's never met a magical system he didn't like.
My vote is for Elton John.

You do know that NOBODY but you and the staff can see your infractions, right? Thanks for sharing, but let me make this clear to everyone: ONLY THE AFFECTED MEMBER AND THE STAFF CAN SEE THAT MEMBER'S INFRACTIONS. So do not assume anything from not seeing something obvious in the thread...
Oh, and this sort of discussion is off topic. Please keep to the subject, at least somewhat, and do NOT go off on tangents about who should be enforcing the rules on whom (which is WAY off topic).

i'm just saying that if you're going to go to such lengths to censor me, you want to consider editing the post RIGHT BELOW MINE that quoted my original post. without editing that one as well you come off looking like a power hungry mod out to simply make your presence felt.
on topic: i was going to say john lennon as soon as i saw the thread title.

I wonder if de-evangelizing music pieces are done in response to the untapped anti-religious music market, or from a composer's true calling to de-evangelize. My wonder comes from the fact that these "popular musicians" get on the "done the most" list, and we can only quote one verse of one song to prove their worthiness.

Sinead O'Conner is deeply religious. She was protesting the Catholic Church practically condoning child molestation by not taking any action. This was before all the big news stories broke out in America and started national headlines. Bunch of old, horny guys who can't have sex and can't get married. Look what happens.

I'm gonna agree with you there, olePigeon, forcing a man to suppress sexual desire for his entire life is unnatural and unhealthy.
