Who said I was the "avg Kindle owner"? It does have a use, and it is more convenient. Whether someone thinks it's worth spending $250-$450 for that convenience is up to them. Frankly, the thought of going back to lugging around stacks of dead trees all day makes my back ache.

Then why should I care? Just because you have a special set of circumstances doesn't disqualify my statement that by and large, the thing's price is overkill for what it does.
The AppleTV probably works fine for some of people too, but it doesn't mean the thing isn't underpowered/under-featured and overpriced for most.

MacNN coulda got some serious traffic if they had added an "iPad" section to their forums two weeks before it was released, then quickly pull it.

Apple will go where Kindle and Nook can't simply because it's accessible to the blind. Smart move for Apple cozy up with text book publishers, Apple will have zero competition in terms of digital slates.

You know what makes me laugh is that 3 years after the iPhone introduction, other phones are just now finally starting to be reasonably comparable in user experience (Android 2.0 etc). Now that they're finally catching up in phones, Apple gets to knock them on the @$$es again and create another category for the suckers to chase. Maybe by 2013 they'll have a halfway decent tablet.
Sincerely,
Fanboi

Had a friend install Ubuntu on his acer netbook over the weekend, and it came up with quite a nice 'hybrid'-UI (between a fullblown desktop OS and a mobile OS). If Apple does not have a new revolutionary 3D UI ready for this device, i'd actually like something similar to the Ubuntu(Netbook) UI.... in fact it seemed almost-perfect for a tablet (light-weight, touch optimized(large icons with app categories, etc) with nice aqua-like effects)
Sorta similar to this...
Cheers

I don't think I'm going to be interested tomorrow if it just ends up being an ebook reader.
(I might become interested if some people figure out some interesting uses for it)

I think MacNN should be bold and go ahead and make a subforum titled "Apple Tablet".

I don't think the hardware really matters all that much in the greater scheme of things.
It's really all about the content and the delivery of that content, and of course, ease of use.

Yep. We all know it's gonna be sleek and thin. There's no chance of this thing running Photoshop, so the specs are pretty much irrelevant. I'm much more interested in what it does and which dinosaur industry it'll do it do (and hope that Apple doesn't abandon it as they did the AppleTV).

This.
My iPhone is my ebook reader. My MBP is my portable computer. This device will have to offer something totally new and awesome. That'll do at $500. At $1k it'll have to cook me cheeseburgers too.

I've never used a blue-tooth headset with a cell phone, but...
If I had an iTablet to replace carrying around my MacBook *and* the iTablet had phone+bluetooth(via non-AT&T) capabilities, I think I could be happy to forget having an iPhone. You?
PS: On the other hand, having phoning/texting possibilities on a 10" iTablet sitting next to me in the car might make it *way* hard to resist text-while-driving.

I'm guessing that many of the new features of the Apple tablet will find their way to the next iPhone that will be released in the summer, which will be way cheaper (and smaller to carry around) than getting an iSlate now. Plus why would I need both an iPhone and an iSlate, both with cell phone carrier plans to pay?!? Is ATT going to let people upgrade to an iSlate from an iPhone? Will I have an iPhone on ATT and an iSlate on Verizon at the same time? Even I'm not that Apple obsessed. I'll wait for my dual camera, video iChat enabled, multi-touch backed 64GB iPhone 4G.

That's why I hired Kurt Russell to be my bodyguard. Chinatown doesn't scare me.

lol... it looks almost identical to my ipod touch (from the side at least). I was hoping for something more unique in appearance. And get rid of the black borders around the screen, please.

My reasoning:
Aluminum, firstly, gets way too hot. It's not a good material for a tablet that will be held with hands/resting on a lap. The opposite is also true: it gets really cold when the ambient temperature around it is cold. In short, it's a poor material choice for a tablet computer.
Second, aluminum is prone to scratching and dents. Polycarbonate is also prone to scratching, but in off white it's harder to tell. Scratch the silver paint on an aluminum case and it shows. With the dents, in order to mitigate that, another material is in order. Since a tablet will be thrown around, put in many different positions, be more mobile than a laptop... polycarbonate is a better choice.
Thus, since polycarbonate is a more durable, robust material than aluminum, it is more fitting for a tablet computer.
I think they are still playing with the materials, but something tells me they might shoot some rubber on it, like the Clamshell iBook had. That makes sense: some grip when holding it or placing it down on flat surfaces. That rubber may wrap around the back and come up around the sides of the tablet. This way, when holding it, or when propping it up on a flat surface, it will have some grip, and not slide all over the place.
With aluminum, the "bottom" - the part of the tablet that rests on the surface when, say, you want to watch a movie, or use it as a screen with a bluetooth keyboard... that part would be scratched and dented in no time...
No, they won't go with aluminum... if I have to eat my words, I will, but I am 99% sure they won't. The only way they might do aluminum is if they really wrap most of it in rubber, like the Sony eReader PRS-600. But I don't think they will do this. We'll get unibody polycarbonate with a rubber wrap.
Hi..... Can I have $100?

Looking at this, what makes me happy is that it means the new iPhone SDK will actually have reasonable typographic abilities (Apple's official take on having styled text before was "Make a Web page" — I am not kidding).

Well, that sucks. I was hoping to get something that could replace my 12" Cintiq, but alas, no pressure sensativity= drawing for retards. It's just sort of annoying to lug around a 13" MBP and a 12" Cintiq with all the cables. I really wish there was an OSX version of a normal PC tablet that used wacom drivers and had a stylus. This blows.

There is a lot of bitching over in the Engadget comments about not having Flash. Personally, I think that is q good thing. Flash is like building a boat with a whole in the bottom.
