This fall I am taking a C++/Unix course, and I don't feel like using a different machine to work on my programs. Would Microsoft Visual C++ work well on VPC 6 w/ XP?

That's the reason I got VPC 6 and XP.

It does run (albeit a bit sluggish), but it works well considering it's on an emulator. Just be ceratin you realise you won't be seeing it go as well as you would on a normal PC.

Bit I use it this way and it's fine.

Also be sure to turn off all that unsightful eyecandy too in XP. There is a lot of stuff running in the background that will speed it up for you.

Talk has it that Win 2K is better though

Something is wrong here. Why don't you use Xcode for your C++ development when you will program for UNIX anyway?

seriously, unless your doing Windows apps or something else windows specific with that C++ (which seems your not) why on earth are you limiting your programming to VS?

Use XCode, or better yet use any old editor and build with gcc in terminal.

PS: yeah, it should run fine. I think I used VS 6 on W2K a few years back when we did a breakout game in comp53 (gui code was given)

For C++ you don't really need an IDE at all, and if you do, XCode is a better choice for UNIX apps. If you do for some odd reason want to use VisualC++, it should run reasonably well in the emulator (better than more graphical things like games or web browsing).

When I was a student at Georgia Tech many years ago, the management users (too dumb for engineering) used pico and the engineers used vi. I suspect it's still the same way.

Unfortunately at the College I attend it's all based on MS software.

MS supply their software free to schools and colleges here in Australia. As a student you are even allowed to have their software for free via the school you are attending (like I'd need it, as if).

So being limited to VB.net/C++ is just the way it is until I leave College. Then, for me at least, I'll migrate to something like RealBasic or whatever.

But for now as MS is the done thing during my course I'm using VPC to do my homework on.

You have to use Visual Studio in a C++/Unix course? That may be the single most brain-dead thing I've ever heard.

Sometimes I hate schools. More often than I'd like. Yeah, Microsoft is giving their software away for free so is the Free Software Foundation!
