Notice that ShowPreview attribute in the column view settings? I tried setting it to zero, but that made the finder crash on startup......

Hmmm... in the preference file com.apple.finder.plist that ends up being a boolean rather than a string - changing the value from true to false (editing in any text editor) & relaunching the Finder gets rid of the Finder window preview. It's probably possible through defaults, but it's pretty well nested in the list.
