I find this comment here very interesting. I just hope that's what it is!
...****iTunes Mobile is a software solution, NOT a hardware solution**** For those of you criticizing the design of the phone: you are missing the point. This phone (e398) has been around for a while now. That's not the news ("It has a video icon!", "I don't like silver!")
The point is that you'll be able to download and install the iTunes Mobile application onto any phone (of minimum spec, by which I mean mp3 playback capability, ie. the later Nokias, SE K700 and above, and newer motos... NOT THE OLD SCHOOL T610-class phones that are still hanging around, esp. in the US).
The news about iTunes Mobile is that *every* modern phone becomes an extension of iTunes and the iTunes Music Store (where the dollars are)... you tie people into the platform, you keep the hardware independent (after all, new phones are released practically daily)...

So is the iTunes phone going to be a different handset to the Motorola ROKR music phone? There is also this image going around, its older than the engadget pic, and looks photoshoppy. But the general shape and buttons down the side look similar to the E398, so maybe the E398 pictured is a kind of 'test mule' for the ROKR/iTunes phone.

Linked because it looks a bit big and I want to be tooki's bestest friend evar!
Oh and the software looks like it could be put onto any Motorola phone with that OS on it (178x220 pixel screen - V600, RAZR etc).

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

It looks like Apple is doing with iTunes what make MS such a success: They are making the software available to anyone who wants it. Which is the only way to go

Fine if it's a software solution, but really they should make a brand new, iPod like designed phone as an option for those of us who would like to replace our gorgeous iPods with something equally appealing.

Personally I don't think this is going to happen. There are excellent phones available out there, build by people who know what they're doing. I'd be surprised if there was an Apple branded phone.

A couple of things:
1) The software is AMAZING.
2) The phone is OK looking... nothing special (I know Apple could do better)
Considering how stylish all the iPods are, I'm amazed this is the phone they would use to sell the service.

hopefully they won't let moto's interface people near it - my moto drives me mad - its interface is dire, sometimes I want to throw it against a wall

It is ugly, and it looks like some free phone that somebody would get for signing up for some mobile service. I won't be getting one.

It's the software solution that's interesting, not the specific phone model.

The phone looks like some regular moto crap...
Even if the software is damn good, what about battery life? The concept of combining mp3 players with cell phones eludes me.
