Hey all,
MacSkinz are not an easy product to manufacture otherwise you would probably see a comparable product for the millions of PCs out there. iPod Skinz are easier (now that we have the printing nailed down) and help keep our doors open while we push to get our primary product MacSkinz back online. As for a time frame, I should be seeing MacSkinz samples by the end of this coming Monday. If they look good, it will take a few more weeks for production quantities. When they become available, look for the 12" & 14" iBook and the 12", 15" & 17" PowerBook. The TiBook should follow soon thereafter because it is more difficult to manufacture. Once production issues are solved, development will be far quicker.
Doug

I've seen this thread grow and grow and watched the designs of macskinz progress, but until 2 months ago when I finally got an ibook none of it seemed relevant. Now I too can say how much I like the design (from what I remember) and ask when the site will be coming back.. Of course I prefer that you take your time and get it right. Just wanted you to know that the interest is still here.

well if you have an older iBook that you would be willing to mod you could do this to it. It isn't hard and it is reversable, if you don't want it.

My over one year old MacSkinz on my 12" powerbook is getting rather old. How difficult can manufacturing these things be if they were offered at one point?
I'm looking forward to the product coming back out though, even though one year not available is far too long. I'm glad to see y'all still in business though.

As of 5 days ago, MacSkinz were "just around the corner". What's that mean? Is that the same as the "soon" we've been hearing? I know it must be frustrating for you Doug, if you miss the holiday shopping season.

Why would you "crack your LCD" if you didn't have a MacSkinz?

andretan, a non-MacSkinz mod is to remove the case and paint it. If you were careless (or perhaps just unlucky), you could damage your LCD badly while it's unprotected. I think that's what SSharon was referring to, not threatening to mutilate said iBook if MacSkinz don't make it out.
Though I will go on record and say that, if iBook MacSkinz are not released before the new year, I will get rid of my old and mostly non-working Umax J700!! And I'll do it too, just watch me!

yes I only meant that taking off the case can be hard because if you put too much pressure in the wrong spot, poof. If you are good with this kind of stuff by all means do so, I think I am going to wait a bit anyway and maybe help a friend do this mod before doing it myself on my own machine.

Hey all,
for those who are curious about why MacSkinz for laptops are not yet available, check out the following link. In particular, the last update.
http://www.macskinz.com/MACSKINZ/story.html
The last I heard, we should have the plastic around the middle of December. Then production can begin.
I am far more upset than any prospective customer could possibly be.
Thanks,
Doug

Thanks for the update, Doug. I think many folks around here are waiting (some of us not so patiently) for you to start taking orders again. Hopefully, you are going to get flooded with business! The artist series looks awesome killer!

how is that legal?

I suspect the "ordeal got a little ugly and we are still dealing with it" part kinda alludes to the legality of it!

Doug,
I just got finished reading your website with all the latest (most tragic indeed). I was wondering if you had squashed the bugs and were waiting on a good shipment of plastic and some time to stockpile? I check your site nearly daily and am ready to order as soon as you get some 12" Powerbook skinz out there. I would even be willing to pre-order.
Good luck!! I'll keep checking back...
Great product, can't wait to get my hands on one....or two....

I'd like some G4 skinz... but it apparently could be a (long) while...
might just be easier to take the side panels off, take the paint off the inside, and paint them a different colour myself. I have a friend who is an auto-detailer guy... I could have him put something on there

Hey all,
the special plastic is in and I will be forgoing MacWorld this year so that I can get production going on the laptops as soon as possible. Also, instead of building a large inventory before going live, I will be making the product available as it gets produced. This should speed things up for those that have been patiently waiting.
Thanks,
Doug

I'd like to second (third, etc.) the enormous interest in Macskinz iBook case mods for people who don't want to open up the monitor, and I'll add that there should be HUGE interest for the skinz here in Europe too. I'd order a handful right away.
Re. designs and colors, the artist ones are a nice idea, but re. colors, I'd love to see an ALL BLACK skin and a TITANIUM GRAY one. Nostalgia for the Pismo and PBG4 envy!
Good luck.

The latest news is that I am sitting here looking at prototype Skinz for the 12" iBook, 14" iBook, 12" PowerBook, 15" PowerBook, 17" PowerBook and the TiBook. If you've been keeping up with the progress, you'll know that we switched plastics and the printing process and are now outsourcing the forming with high tech equipment. With all those adjustments in the process, I just found out something that is not such good news. The shrinkage ratio of the plastic has changed and they are now all about .075" too small. This means new molds need to be made. It's not really a big deal except for the fact that I need to make 12 new molds(2 of each size) with new specs. This is going to cost a healthy chunk of change. At least I already have all the CNC programing done and all of the plastic printed up.
Thanks,
Doug

Sounds good... any word on when they are good to be ordered and shipped out?
March? April? May?
Well... Great ideas make $$$.
Other than the MacSkinz for the ibook and Powerbooks... there are no other products (that i know of) that cover the exterior of them.
Are the Skinz for the Ibooks and Powerbooks similar to the ones of the iPod? The plastics don't have to be replaced and can be used as permanent stick-ons.
One reason i'm asking is... i'm in the middle of deciding whether to repaint or wait it out for skinz. Repaint would cost alot... and a lot of trouble.. taking it apart and time without a comptuer whereas this would be perfect.

I hope that exclusive Star Wars cover they are doing for Episode III helps out their bottom line quite a bit. Then we may finally see the laptop skins.
