Why can't it stretch across two monitors?

Because they are not always the same hight/size.

It would look and feel terrible.

I think the main monitor menu bar is the best and most consistent idea.

I have a different problem. On my 800x600 iBook screen, the menu-items of an application more than often obscure the time, connection information on the right side of the screen. Is there a way to make them appear? Or use a more condensed font?
