I have a few questions about File System Journaling. It is on by default in OS X 10.3. What are the benefits of having this turned on?

Will my system be faster if I turn this off? If it can be, how do I go about it?

Thanks if you can help.

In the event of system crashes, you are less likely to lose data and won't have to face long restarts or run disk utilities.

A little bit, occasionally. Mainly, copying or saving a lot of files could be 1-10% faster.

To turn it off, open Disk Utility, select the hard drive to disable it on, and select Disable Journal in the file menu.

With journaling activated under Panther, you get automatic file defragmentation (for files under 20 MB in size) and "hot-files" optimization that puts the most used files (small size) in the fastest zone of the hard disk or "hot band".
