On Friday, FM 101.1 KLOL, which has been a rock station in Houston for over 30 years, changed to a Spanglish Top 40. The Houston market now has 16 different Spanish stations, did we need another? There's now only two rock station left, 94.5 (Alt Rock) and 93.7 (Classic Rock). This f'n pisses me off so much that Clear Channel did this. Walton and Johnson, the morning show, didn't know about it until Thursday night (they had posted some details but that has been pulled).

Is there a number or address that people can write to Clear Channel about this?

This is a heinous act of heresy. KLOL was where I first heard Bruce Springsteen and Genesis when I was a kid in the seventies. Their evening DJ "Crash" was f*cking legendary! Clear Channel has crossed the line!

I found the link to Clear Channel's email page. There's also a petition (not that they ever work).

CC did the same crap here in San Jose, CA. KSJO 92.3 was a 30 year Rock station and last week switched to classic spanish music.

Sadly, not many people noticed except to diehard Rock fans. The station was going downhill fast with its endless playlists of AC/DC, Metalica, etc.

Now that is something I can definitely agree with.

I'm no diehard rock fan, but I certainly noticed. I started up the car to drive to work, and thought my radio had reset itself. I guess I should've known - the guys from the morning show had moved over to 107.7 (the other local butt rock station) several weeks before. They even crank called the new station the morning of the format change it's not as funny when they're ripping on a guy who doesn't speak English, though.

Yes, they were playing too much material by a select few bands, but their "Mandatory Metallica" thing was cool for a while until everyone started copying it.

I didn't really care that much, but a quick Google search I just did turned up some angry messages from former listeners.

Oh I have an iPod and use it all the time, but I don't have a full library like a radio station will, or any of their morning shows, and my commute to work isn't long enough to warrant an XM Radio.

Absolutely. I messed with an iTrip, and it was staticy and weak, no matter what I did. Finally, I realized that my power amp had a couple of extra inputs on it, so I bought me a mini-phone to stereo RCA cord at Radio Shack, and now I'm pumpin' 150 watts of iPod per channnel.

This is nothing new. KLSX 97.1 in LA changed formats several years ago. It was the best classic rock station I've ever listened to. Then overnight they changed it into a talk radio station. I'll never forget the first time I tuned in. It was the first night of the change and people were calling in during Jim Ladd's old timeslot. He's an LA DJ that has a very loyal following and people were calling in to bitch. It was really sad. Thankfully KLOS picked him up. Like him or not, he's one of the only DJs out there playing whatever the hell he wants. And that's VERY rare nowadays.

Just to post a followup, we finally got our rock station back, although now it's KIOL (notice the I ) 97.5 and it's owned by Cumulus Media, not f'n CC.

Hopefully they'll be able to get some of the former DJs and Walton & Johnson back.

KSJO in the San Francisco/San Jose Bay Area (92.1, 92.3, and 92.7) was replaced by a Spanish station.

Clear Channel and other large corporations owning large chunks of market share with out any competition is what is killing radio. I have completely given up on FM radio because its all the same garbage that only 2 or 3 corporations keep pumping out because thats what they have decided Im allowed to listen to. Thats why I only listen to talk radio or my own music.

It doesn't top the recent change of the famous WHFS in DC, which was a fairly indie/alternative rock station that just went all-latino. The HFStival is a local tradition for many. I can't imagine what it'll be like now. (I doubt it'll have the crappy assembly-line body piercing booth.)

We still have KSAN 107.7. KSJO was cool back in the day, but near their end all the played was white rap. "Oh, it has a guitar... so it's rock." Bullsh*t. It's rap.

They just finished playing Linkin Park and I still remember some guy called in and asked, "What the hell is up with all that rap?! I thought you guys were a rock station?!"

The DJ (might've been Mikey) said, "Sir, we've never played rap in the history of KSJO."

The caller's all, "Uh... OK... then what's up with all the reggae?"

Anyway, when 107.7 came out I was in music heaven. Classic rock, metal, everything from 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. They play Aerosmith, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, the GOOD Metallica, Megadeth, it's awesome. Occasionally they play some of the newer stuff. They had House of 1000 Corpses for a while. Stupid movie, AWESOME sound track.

They're called "The Bone" and for a while fans were called "Boners." Some asswipe got offended and they had to change it to "Bone Heads." Boner was cooler.

The radio is boring, and full catalogue like a radio station? Dang, with my 140ish CDs in iTunes I have more variety than any radio station I know of. Sure they may HAVE more in their libraries but they rarely play em.

There's this station in my area, 96.9, that started a while back. They first tried to compete with the local KISSFM, and tried to play that kind of music. When that didn't work out they changed to classical/opera type stuff. Then they went and played all kinds of who-knows-what (Someone told me they heard the Star Wars theme on there once). What do they play now? Christian Rock.
