How do Apple Stores get started
Does Apple have to come to an area and say we're going to open a store here
Or do they franchise thier name out and let them be personally run
Any info on this would be greatly appreciated

Looking to get in the franchise?

Sadly, I don't think they are that way. They are all Apple owned and run.

According to Steve (last WWDC keynote), they have a full blown department within Apple to spot out potential new locations.

The closest to owning an Apple store would be to become a manager. Large metropolitan areas should have one in due time, often its a mater of finding a lease in the area of interest.

I'm certain they look at more than large metropolitan areas. They do an extensive traffic flow and affluence study. Spending Habbits. It makes sense though to attack the large areas first and then move into the other areas first.

I was speaking with a fellow from France and he lived in Nice (sp) and he said he had nowhere to bring his powerbook to be serviced... and was thinking of switching back. They need to get a store in Nice quick!

Last I checked, Cincinnati is in Southern Ohio -- and we've had an Apple store for about 4 years...

Also, I believe I read recently that Dayton will also be getting one too at some point

Actually, the Columbus store looks to be about 60 miles from Chillicothe and the Cincinnati store about 90. Probably not going to get much closer to you than that...

Most companies spend a great deal of time and money researching locations before stores open. That said, Apple picked the worst spot for their first store here in Texas. As nice as it is for me, since the store is around the corner, any of the other 3 malls in the area have much better traffic and would have performed better.

Running your own store is called running an Authorized Retailer store. Heres the bad news, Apple hates Authorized Retailers, and wishes to see them gone, replaced with Apple run and owned stores. If you open one, you will be last to get any new stock, have to deal with increasing policies on how to repair a system, and basicially start pondering switching to being a PC store, since Apple, the company you might have helped saved in the 90s if you were open then, now has no need for you.

Why Apple didn't just work with resellers to make the Apple Stores is beyond me. I trust a guy who has been supporting Macs for 20 years more then the underpaid teens that are now also filling Apple Stores the same as the ones at CompUSA. They do have some of these co-op Apple/Retailer stores in Europe called Apple Pro stores, but those are also now going downhill with official Apple stores showing up.
