I have a white MacBook, the early 2009 model. at some point I noticed a regular clicking sound (I tried recording it but it was too quiet to be picked up by the MacBook's mic), and it's there pretty much whenever the lid is open and I'm using it (it goes away when I go into sleep mode). I tried searching and found many references to clicking noises, none of which matched my noise. it's a regular, constant click occuring about 4 times/second, and sounds like the tick of a quartz clock. I suspect it might be the fan, but I'm not sure if this is normal or not. it sounds like it's coming from somewhere near where the E-R-T keys are located. anyone have the same issue?

The only source of clicking I've had over the years is excessive hard drive activity / pending failure.

I put in a new hard drive, and I'm pretty sure the clicking happened on the original drive as well. I don't suspect it's the HD because it's been doing this for months, and the sound isn't coming from the part of the body where the HD sits...

Just to be same it never hurts to run a long smart test on your drive, unless the clicking goes away when the machine is idle (in which case it would be the fan). These are the only moving parts in your laptop.

What besson3c said. The current crop of MacBooks has fewer moving parts than ever before-even the mouse button on the trackpad is part of the trackpad instead of a separate part. The hard drive, optical drive and fans are the only moving parts inside. It appears to be coming from the side of the machine that houses the hard drive, but I'd expect the sound of a bad hard drive to actually come from closer to the left wrist rest area. In any case, SMART is your friend. You are near the end of your free 1 year hardware period so I'd test the drive's status thoroughly right now and be prepared to take the machine to the nearest Apple Store if the sound persists.

Oh, and BACK EVERYTHING UP NOW.

Well, SMART Utility is your friend. SMART alone, as shown in mainstream utilities, is essentially useless.

you could always take out the drive and see if the machine still makes the noise.

I bet it's the fan. They are pretty cheap. A sound from near the ERT keys is nowhere near the hard drive, but close proximity to the fan.
