I don;t even know if this is the right forum, but I'd like to get a Ukrainian keyboard since my daughter is learning the language. I went to Apple.ru and the keyboard they show there is a English (Roman) one. So does anyone know? Thanks in advance for any help.

the thing is that Cyrillc or Russian keyboards are just English keyboards with Cyrillic-letter stickers on them. They're sold in Russia in lots of places. They're usually red, and small enough to fit in the space that the English letters don't occupy on the keys. maybe some of the high-end keyboards have the letters blazoned on, but I've never seen one.

If you have Ukrainian friends, they might be able to get someone to mail you some stickers. I could get you some Russian ones, but that wouldn't be helpful, as the alphabet is slightly different.

I memorized the Soviet/Russian layout, and I recommend that your daughter memorize the Ukrainian layout. She can use the application KeyCaps (in OS X, it's in the Applications>>Utilities folder) to familiarize herself with typing and what key combos do--such as shift, option, etc.

It took me only a couple weeks to get proficient, and I practised with basic literature or poetry. She should do the same.

Congrats to you for encouraging her to type in Ukrainian. It'll be a good skill, especially when it comes to emailing in the language. I've had a blast with learning to type well in Russian (as nerdy as that sounds).

Unfortunately I do not know anyone in Ukraine. :-( BTW Something interesting I noticed when at apple.ru is that at http://www.apple.ru/cgi-bin/download.cgi?macosxrus it seems that you can download Mac OS X 10.1 for free. Am I reading that correctly?

I wonder if Jaguar will be free soon too then???

unfortunately, no. That is the Russification package for OS 10.1. I tried it about 2 months ago and it worked well. did what it says: put the Finder and many system prefs, programs, and components into Russian. It's included in Jaguar (10.2).

Included in Jaguar? I did not see that X is localized in Russian.

Or you mean a Russification package? So how one goes about running OS X 10.2 in Russian?

10.2 in Russian must look rather unusual. Once I've tried Using OmniWeb in Russian. It looked rather funky and I was lost in the interface.

you'll need to open up system prefs, click the international pane, then the 'language' tab. Russian (русский) won't appear in the list, so you'll have to click 'edit...'. select it from *that* list to activate it, which makes it appear in the language tab's list. now drag the Russian selection to the top and reboot your computer. it should appear in Russian.

but it does look wacky.

Cool. I found the stickers at https://www.hooleon.com so now I can have both a QWERTY and a ЙЦУКЕН* keyboard too! Thank you very much for the help y'all!

*Just realized I have to have Mozilla to type with Cyrillic fonts here at MacNN.

I am probably not doing something right. I did exactly what you suggested and no change. All menus and dialogues are still in English.

I am probably missing something, but I did not see Russian as a choice during Jaguar installation.

Sorry that this thread is becoming more and more off-topic. And thanks.
