It might look a little busy, but I have the room on my PB17 and I use everything up there regularly.

From left, I have Fruit Menu to add the Finder icon and modify menus, F10 (best app launcher that I've tried), Slim Battery Monitor, Konfabulator, Sound, WinSwitch, Bluetooth, Menu Meters (Hall of Fame app), iSync, AirPort (using iColon to colorize AP and BT), Eject button and CalendarClock.

No, no. Tom, you're fine.
He's talking to Demograph, who contributed what I interpreted as a distinct Dr. Evil "riiiiight."

Demo, did I nail it?

I keep mine up there so I can SEE what my volume is set at. I use the keys to adjust it. I don't want a surprise BEEP when everyone is sleeping and I want to know if I'm muted when I don't hear anything when I try to play a mp3 etc.

It doesn't matter when I have my external keyboard hooked up, but when mobile, I remapped the eject key to other features I'd use more often. Honestly, I thought about taking it off since I often use cntl-eject anyway.

Hey, did you know that if you hold down the shift key while changing the volume it won't make that annoying sound?

I have owned xScope for quite awhile now and I had no idea you could do that! Thank you!

Because when you are in a lecture or presenting, it is nice to visually see if the sound is off. You could just turn it off, but if it was already on mute, it would make that annoying sounds and you would get a bunch of looks.

Then again, you could just do that! Most useful piece of information I have seen all day. Thank you!

I have a question.. Is it possible to overlap with the text... Can you actually have a menu extra that overlaps the help menu?

No, the menu extras just disappear as the real menus get too close. Switch your resolution to 640 and you can find that out REAL quick!

The volume keys are coupled to the FKeys of PowerBooks by default. The official Apple Pro Keyboard has dedicated volume keys in FKey-position.

Technically, however, you could assign any FKey to do a task like this through scripting using a program like FLaunch.

I try to not let my menu bar grow any fatter than this, or else I'd probably have a bunch more crap up there (maybe if I ever get a 30" Cinema Display ).

The weather app is WeatherMenu. The Sound and Monitor menu extras are probably not necessary, but do prove useful sometimes, and I like having them there.
