Serious iPod Error Message

On the screen (this is a first-generation iPod if it's necessary to know) there is a picture of a disc with an exclamation mark next to it (the top-left corner). What does this mean?

This sometimes happens when the SW gets corrupted. You'll probably have to use iPod Utility (in your Utilities folder) to reset the device. Hope you have all your music in iTunes!!!

It's actually my sister's iPod (I have a newer one). Unfortunately, she doesn't have her music in iTunes. Whoops.

It seems that when I connect the ipod to the computer, it automatically "updates" the software, but the progress bar always stops right near the end. Is there some way to flash the memory so I can start over?
