One friend, in Boston, has a PowerMac which comes without a mic (and the company never bought USB mics for them). So he's a no-go.

Dad, across the bay in Alameda, is having trouble updating his powerbook to 10.2.6, so he's a no-go until I go over and see what's going on.

Anyone want to test; I see the previous poster's name is edited out. Try SF Geek and see if I'm in.

I am very impressed. it doesn't work completely perfectly, but it is almost there, and the setup is really plug and play! Voice worked great! Video quality was great but no audio...

Nice chats with silverghost (aloha!) and rlmorel.

Video is great.

Audio seems to cut out strangely. I'm using a Sony DCR-TRV20 digital video camera. Whether I use the internal mic or the one in the camera, when video is running the audio is unreliable.

Without video it was pretty good (with richard). I'm off for a few hours, but I'll be back online to test later, when the family is asleep.

Looking forward to chatting with more of you.

I've tested this a few times yesterday. This new iChat is cool. The audio is Excellent and the video that I did with someone who had an iSight was just as good. This is Pretty amazing. Hopefully they will get it to work with AIM so I can chat with my friends who use that. Even if there is no video.

I was downloading and uploading a bunch of movie files yesterday, while I was testing iChat AV. No wonder it wasn't, umm, wonderful.

I just got back from the Apple Store / Emeryville CA with three iSight cameras (one for each bunch of grandparents). The cameras are very, very nicely done. The one word I'd choose is "impressive" manufacturing. Head and shoulders above the QuickCam or iBot.

Finished a chat with Mr100Percent: he said he could see me blinking. The color is absolutely amazing; much, much better than my Sony DCR-TRV20 (and it doesn't auto-off after three minutes).

I am, amazed. And if you think that's just another dweeb's opinion, remember I wrote a book about Internet videoconferencing on the Macintosh back in 1995.

Wow, this brought my Orange Micro iBot back to life!

Finally!

But under which firewall services do I modify the port settings
to enable the specific port?

Also it -- accounts preference-- only seems to want to use my .mac screen name or a new .mac

I'd prefer to use a different free AIM -- how to change that?

Thanks

Very impress so far (I've talked with people within the States, Argentina, and Spain). Sound quality using my TiPB 400 mic appeared to be pretty good, no sound lag, felt like a phone call. "Negotiating" with Spain was speedy...

I'm seriously considering an iSight to video-chat with my family in Spain. It is a heck of an application! So simple that even my "technologically challenged" parents could use it!

One of the folks with whom I chatted yesterday mentioned that the picture was so clear that he could see me blinking.

Two people with whom I've chatted today have been using iSight cameras (as am I) but their images have been somewhat less than sharp.

Is that a function of the bandwidth they've got?

Other than that bit of weirdness, and that the first time I used the iSight the camera's mic was wedged (selecting another source and then selecting the iSight's again seems to have fixed that).

Mmmmmmm. Nice.

Only audio because of the 600 MHz limit. I really want that stupid limit out!!!

You want that limit out about as much as Apple wants you to purchase new hardware!

And it might just work.

My father and in-laws are using 333 MHz iMacs, and are reasonably happy with them. But now we have a real-world reason to upgrade. I may start trolling eBay to see what >600 MHz machines start to appear; visiting my local computer shops always works too - they usually are desperate to get rid of second-generation hardware.

This might also be the time to move them to iBooks or PowerBooks, to save desk space, about which they're constantly moaning.

I could be feeling Steved, but damn! it's a good day to be a Macintosh user!!!

I sold my Ti-book 500 because a friend needed it and I wanted to upgrade to the coming new PowerBook (when o when...).
In the meantime I'm using a second hand iMac DV SE (400MHz), and added RAM to 1024 MB. Quite a nice machine for some browsing etc.
Then they come with this 600 MHz rule. It just feels a shame as the rest runs quite ok actually. But I do understand that they went for quality, I guess.

The argument might be phrased to the rest of us as "we made a 600 MHz lower limit so as to preserve the user experience", and there might be a teeeny bit of truth in it, but it's hard to be open to such a thing when

(1) we know they could have made a postage stamp-sized window for slower machines

(2) we know Apple makes it's money on hardware sales

But of course that's always its been, with all hardware companies. I choose to stay near the bleeding edge, others stay far behind, and most find a comfortable spot somewhere in-between.

But that iSight, to borrow words from Jean-Louis Gassee (remember him?), "smells like tomorrow".

Anybody knows if the 600 Mhz limit only concerns G3 processors ? Or is a 450 Mhz G4 not fast enough either ? Apple says "600 MHz G3 processor or higher", so maybe there's a chance...

I believe that the software does a brain-damaged test for 600 MHz and doesn't take anything else into account.

I have been having a blast chatting with y'all.

This is old hat for me, having gone through the CU-SeeMe thang in the mid-1990s, but it's just great seeing people videoconference for the very first time.

For those of you just discovering this thread, I may be reached at (AIM) SF Geek. If the kids are going to sleep I'll let you know.

Actually when I installed iChat AV on my desktop G4/450, I could see in the prefs "No camera attached to this computer", just under the view where you're supposed to see what the camera sees. So I guess a 450 Mhz G4 is enough for videoconferencing... Or maybe they made it look like every computer can do video, but when you plug an actual camera an error pops up...
Ancient G3 owners, what do you see in the prefs ?

Ok I just read in the iChat AV help (translated from french) :
"You can use iChat AV on 600 Mhz or higher G3 computers, and on G4 computers."
So Mhz don't matter on G4s.

This is so unfair!!!

Here I am with a brand new iSight and iChat AV quits unexpectedly as soon as I have clicked the Done button after entering setup information.

I really want to play too!!! (sniff sniff)

If anyone can help please reply to my thread here.
