Neither. ...because the music which I listen to generally tends to have intelligent lyricists who don't need to swear to make a point. If there's swearing, it's probably not my kind of music, thus I wouldn't be buying it.

It's like watching the TV with the sound off and a band comes on. If there's an Orange amp in the backline somewhere, I know not to bother turning the sound up.

Explicit, this should have been a poll.
Please keep in mind the ambiguously selective general understandings we've all agreed upon...

Explicit. It's the artist' original intent, and usually its version you know best (If you're buying something you heard previously).

Songs about dragons. And wizards. And big swords.

Actually, I'm mainly an 80's rock fiend.
There's a huge difference between being explicit and simply mentioning something. It's much more fun if the lyricist implies things... ...for example:

I'm with you, Doof.

I don't see the point of listening to a band that has explicit lyrics/content in it, especially if you're not an angst-ridden 16-year-old who feels the need to swear every other word in order to be "cool." Definitely a big

Of course, this is coming from a guy who likes Coldplay, John Mayer Trio, Derek Webb, Jack Johnson, Lifehouse, Michael Bublé, Sigur Rós, Switchfoot, and The Wallflowers rather than people like Daddy Yankee and T-Pain.

explicit, you never know what's going to be edited out of songs by someone at the label making it "walmart friendly." Not just f--- and s---, but references to drugs (even in obviously derogatory framework) or politics.

that said I don't tend to buy much with lots of swearing anyhow.

If so then yeah, that's my type of music.

Bands of today that are prog. and my favorite are Mars Volta and Tool.

lord, that's a ridiculous statement if i've ever heard (read?) one. profanity has a time & place like all words, and using it artistically has nothing to do with lacking intelligence. that is, of course, unless you have an incredibly simplistic view of language & its role in our lives.

Yes, that's considered profanity (bitch or son of a bitch is a curse).

Second, I managed to download the track of itunes and that part is BLEEPED OUT (because its from whenever the original track came out).

I'll give you the intelligent part, I guess, but the statement is creatively consistent with the character its portraying.

I think Dave Matthews Band's "If I Had It All" is at least not unintelligent.

If I had it all, you know
I'd **** it up

If I were a king
If I had everything
If I had you and I could give you your dreams
If I were giant-sized, on top of it all
Then tell me what in the world would I sing for...

Pretty much any time after 9pm. The BBC has pushed the envelope recently, showing "Titanic" (uncut) at 6pm(ish). Boobs no big deal here.

I'm not going to give you that one, since the message could just as easily have been conveyed by substituting the word "screw" or "mess".

(I'm unaware of the song - and in fact the band - so I don't know how the substitute words would splice into the sung phrase. From experience, I'm guessing they'd splice in pretty easy)

They could have, but I don't see how the words "screw" or "mess" would have worked any better there. The point is not that swearing is required, it's that it doesn't make the song any worse. I mean, you could have written that post without the word "just," but that doesn't disqualify the post from having any merit.

Funny, because I was pondering this on my drive home.

"I messed it up." Sounds like something a child or contrite teenager would say. Also, the lack of a hard consonant makes it difficult to add inflection.

"I screwed it up." Passable, at least. Problem is I think the 'shocking' nature of the F-bomb (particularly out of DMs mouth) communicates the gravity of what he has done or feels about it.

I know I'm not changing your mind about it, but I felt like adding my perspective on the subject. Senseless cursing does nothing for me, put I do think there's a place for it, and that it convey a certain emotional gravity that regular may not (when used correctly).

Yeah, I think "**** it up" is the best way to phrase that line, but that's kind of subjective, so I was mainly sticking to the more objective point that while the line could be changed, I see no real reason for such self-censorship.

The BBC is gov't owned and run right? That's just so messed up compared to what we're used to. The renegade media companies 'push the envelope' and then the gov't has to reign them in and fine them and stuff.

I'd agree whole heartedly, and I tend to listen to Indie Oriented Rock. The truly talented musicians have hardly any swearing in them. Plus if you are buying from a Label that follows those explicet standards you must be listening to fairly manstream stuff; which often will have quite unneccessary swearing in it.

Sort of. I'd say more like "government enforced". It's a self-contained organisation which the government forces us to pay for.

A parallel might be if the US government forced you to give Ford $200 a year to have a driving licence (regardless of whether you owned a Ford or not), then giving Ford a few loose directives (i.e. all cars made must have steering wheels) under which they must run.

That's interesting! So would the government reign them in if they went to far, say, explicit sex before 9?

As much as I think it's immature to use profanity, I do NOT like censored music.

I'd say 99% of my music is profanity free. I can only think of a few uses of profanity in my music collection. Pink Floyd, Matchbox 20, and Heather Nova. And in both cases when they have used profanity I thought it wasn't over the top.

In certain instances, the edit seems better. Check the edit of Walk This World (Heather Nova) where the second line, second verse is changed to "sucked in". It actually works better with the edit.
