My advisor will buy a powerful computer for me to calculate in Matlab.

My question is: G4 is faster than P4 in matlab??? Did anyone test it?

thanks

I don't have a solid answer, but I had the same situation with the difference that my Texan Faculty Advisor would rather have been hornswoggled (whatever that means) than buy one of those Commie Macs, so I automatically got a Windows workstation.

The upshot was that I spent tons and tons of time reinstalling Windows and trying to get the OS environment "just right", instead of doing actual work.

So I probably would have been more productive on a G4 even if it was slower.

But that's just me.

As for using a G4 with linux- there is no PPC linux version of matlab, although you could nab Octave, but that isnt the full matlab.

As for a G4 versus a P4, strictly for Matlabbing, I'm sorry to say it (as I type on my Powerbook G4), but I would definatly go with a P4 system, running linux. I have a 1.2ghz Athlon system running Linux, and it runs most matlab functions significantly faster then my Powerbook. I am also, currently looking for a good computation machine (gotta love that grant money), and I will definatly be going with a dual 2.8ghz Xeon system.
