It better be anything the guy wants, as long as no bones are broken.

Whatever. Spitzer "did it" in a way that made it a Federal offense. Let's think about how dumb he was to have it play out like that.

"It's just mind-blowing that he spent $4,300 on a hooker. It just shows how high the cost of living is in New York. That same hooker would cost $50 in Newark."
"Let me ask you a question. Do you think it's too soon to be hitting on Mrs. Eliot Spitzer?"
Mr. Spitzer's admission that he was involved in a prostitution ring "means that Hillary Clinton is now only the second-angriest wife in the state of New York."
Mr. Spitzer was quoted as saying he had violated his obligation to his family and his sense of right and wrong. "Spitzer also admitted violating someone named Amber."
"You've got to say one thing about this. He's caught soliciting a hooker, but thank God, on the bright side, it did not involve an airport's men's room."
Top Eliot Spitzer excuse: "I thought Bill Clinton legalized this years ago."

What's interesting is this:
All bank transactions are tracked.
Common knowledge has been that only large transfers (the threshold is typically assumed to be $10K) are flagged and inspected, but that is apparently not true. Banks flag some small fraction of transactions internally, forward those to the IRS, which filters again, and only a few ever get really looked at in detail.
One thing that the monitoring software looks for is "bundling" of transactions, a set of smaller transactions all going from Point A to Point B, which is apparently the flag that Spitzer tripped.
Reportedly, "politically exposed persons" (PEPs), including all politicians with a national reputation, their wives, children, even brothers-in-law, get extra scrutiny.
Here's the point to which you must pay attention:
Attorney General Eliot Spitzer was a prime mover in the expansion of much of this monitoring power, and had used it in his prosecutions of organized crime.
So, not only is he hypocritical, but he also found himself on the wrong end of his own hunger for power.
Greek tragedies are only mildly more juicy. All he needs to do now is put out his eyes.
This post owes itself to Rod Van Meter who appears on a mailing list I read. His commentary, my repost.

You haven't been paying attention to the news the last few years have you, about the sex scandals mostly involving Republicans.

Corrected. "All" doesn't work, because a lot of them do in fact have hair on their heads.

Also, the incoming new governor David Patterson is already a Superdelegate due to his membership in the DNC. So Spitzer's resignation will reduce the number of superdelegates by 1. (Both Spitzer and Patterson had already announced support for Hillary, so the net effect is that Hillary's support is reduced by 1.)

Would Paterson's new Lieutenant Gov. be a superdelegate?

To my knowledge, Lt. Gov's are not normally superdelegates, Paterson got to be one because of his involvement in the DNC.
Plus, Lt. Gov's in New York State generally do nothing but wait until a sitting governor dies or leaves office, the position does not have much actual power. There is no mechanism to replace the position, it will be vacant until the next election. The State Senate Leader assumes the "duties" of the Lt. Gov if the position is vacant (but he doesn't get the title).

I think he should resign, particularly if he was campaigning against sex crimes. But, I should hope that those in this thread calling for his head aren't hypocrites and are calling equally loudly for the heads of all politicians guilty of sex crimes.

As Dork said, Paterson's new Lt. Gov is the Senate Majority Leader, the Republican Joseph Bruno.

More hookers? That's old news. B-O-R-I-N-G.
A while back, it was revealed that someone in the Governor's office (a Democrat) was trying to get information on State Senate leader Joe Bruno (a Republican), going so far as to use State Troopers to gather information on Bruno (thus, the press rather unimaginatively dubbed it "Troopergate"). Spitzer has always denied being directly involved, but now that he's no longer Governor, it turns out that the DA investigating the case found Spitzer's involvement all over the place.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/24/ny.../24report.html
It seems that Spitzer was not the right man to clean up Albany after all. (Unless if by "clean up", he really meant dig up enough dirt on Republicans in the State Senate to put Democrats back in the majority there.)
Makes you wonder whether or not Bruno has anything to do with the recent leaks about indiscretions on the part of the new governor. Since the Lt. Governor spot will be vacant until the next election, if anything unfortunate were to happen to the new Governor, Bruno is next in line to take over....
