so i purchased the iPad and i'm going on a vacation tomorrow. very excited.
i want to take 4-5 movies with me to watch on the plane (which doesn't have Wifi). I would rather rent them and save the $10 per movie. But how does this work exactly. Or are you forced to purchase if you're not in a Wifi area?

Can i download a few movies at my house before i leave and then watch these rented movies on the plane? or do you have to be connected to wifi during the entire rental process?

how does it work exactly?

You can download them completely. However, rental movies do have a time limit on them. I can't remember whether it's 24 or 48 hours, but that might be worth checking out.

You have the movie for 30 days, but as soon as you hit 'play' the first time, you have 24 hours to finish the movie.

I pick up movies for free at my local library, rip them, and watch them on my DLNA TV.

so my best bet is to rent the movies from iTunes, but don't hit play until i'm ready to watch.

So in theory (i haven't tested yet) a rented movie can stay on my computer for 2 years and so long as i don't play it.....i'll always have a 24-36 hour period to watch?

No.

After 30 days, the movie will "expire" and be removed from your device.

You have 30 days to start watching, once you've started watching, you have 24 hours to finish. No connection to Wifi is required.

That's strange. When I rent movies through the AppleTV, I get 48 hours to finish the movie.

AppleTV has some other special rules (like if you rent a movie via AppleTV, you can't transfer it to another device). But every rental doc I find on Apple.com/iTunes says it's only 24 hours once you start playing:
