Am I right in thinking that in some places your cops are barely trained at all? I know the big departments have police academies but some of your sheriffs are elected right? And I'm sure I've seen articles implying a certain interchangeability between cops and jobs like security guard which I would expect to go one way but I feel like I've seen examples where it also goes the other. I guess I'm referring to smaller, rural operations and I know these are not the ones with the military grade hardware, though presumably some of them have their own anyway.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

The Sheriff is elected, but many if not most counties require law enforcement experience to run for the office. Deputies are not elected. Deputies don’t necessarily get lots of training, but their main job usually centers around corrections. As actual cops they only have jurisdiction over unincorporated areas. For example, Cook County, which is the county Chicago is in, only has 120K (out of 5MM) residents who aren’t in a municipality. Cook County jail has 100K 6K inmates.

Well, no.

Even if it was, a yardstick where the books have quite obviously been cooked is pretty useless.

So what's the issue? The US is still singular in the number of incarcerated per capita, and I find arguing about China is a distraction.

I’m not really sure exactly what I’m arguing, unless there’s argument over whether the China number is legit. I’m not questioning the US has an insanely high incarceration rate for a western democracy.

Legal weed measures keep passing. Assuming the trend continues, our jail figures will decline somewhat as all the pot convictions vanish.

That still leaves the rest of the War on Drugs arrests. Along with the homeless arrests, walking-while-black people, and leftwing protesters.

Hopefully there will be enough room freed up for the rightwing nutjobs. We do need some space for those guys.

Seems like letting the pot convicted go might be sensible. Especially since some have very long sentences.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I actually really miss besson. I appreciate his surreal, “stream of consciousness” humor. The passive-aggressive stuff made more sense once he mentioned he’s on the spectrum.
