I like to play music stored on my G4 tower on my wireless iBook via iTunes. Sometimes I forget to launch iTunes on the G4 tower first. Is there some way to launch the tower installation of iTunes from the iBook? Perhaps via remote Apple Event?

manual way to do it:
1. turn on 'Remote Login' on the Powermac
2. from iBook, open Terminal and ssh [email protected]l
3. Once logged in, type
open -a iTunes

You could also make an automatic way with Applescript, but I find remote apple events to be a big pain.

Or I could just AppleScript the steps you just outlined instead. How do I terminate ssh when I'm done?

Here are two complete solutions:

1. Apple Events
This is the Applescript you want:
Code:
tell application "Finder" of machine "eppc://username:[email protected]" to open ":Applications:iTunes"
It may prompt you for the password anyway, but if you save it to your Keychain you should be fine.

2. SSH
This looks more complicated but can be much more powerful down the road.
1. On Powermac, open Terminal and type
ssh-keygen -t dsa
Follow the prompts, and press 'return' twice to use an empty password.
2. Do the same thing on the iBook.
3. On the iBook, type
scp .ssh/id_dsa.pub [email protected]:~/.ssh/authorized_keys2

This allows secure, passwordless communication from the iBook to the Powermac.

Now, you can type in Terminal
ssh [email protected] 'open -a iTunes'

or if you prefer, make an Applescript:
Code:
do shell script "ssh [email protected] 'open -a iTunes'"
Cheers!
Let me know if it works for you.
