Have you gotten all the shots with the kids? Growth spurts can mess up later productions, or force lots of reshoots.

Sorry... I’m still a little stunned.
I don’t really have details. She was in her 70s, so I assume COVID. Though, obviously, people that age can die for other reasons.
This is actually the second person on the production who died. One of the other actors had a heart attack.

Arise from the dead!
It’s getting to where we can squint and imagine a possible future where the production resumes.
So, it’s this shit again.
I know I should drop it, but I left off really hating the finished product.
One of the things I hated was not enough ads, and they didn’t have a consistent feel. These are at least kinda close.
Just spent an hour trying to unskew the paper curl on a full page ad. Did an okay job, but the scan ended up looking horrible when printed.
Also, finally coughed up the dough for a newspapers.com account.

Yesterday’s haul. Not bad. Mostly movie theaters and automotive. The newspapers.com account helped a lot. All except one are from 1925. Spot the imposter.

Oooh... this is awesome.
It’s from a larger ad which won’t work out, but I’m totally going to repurpose this part into a banner ad.

Everybody I’m showing this to goes for the tagline, while I’m over here imagining the alternate universe where Walgreens never gave up art nouveau.

The flesh curing wands used in Westworld are Dental UV Curing Wands. I designed them in 2013-2014 or so.

Tell us about the process!
Yesterday’s haul. Not as productive as the day before, but lots of larger ads.
Not sure what the deal is with the Walgreen logo history. I think it’s the same company.
Edit: definitely the same. “Drugs with a reputation” was an official tag.
Edit2: something fascinating about papers from the 20s is they’re packed with ads for garage builders. It’s sort of weird to imagine, but of course there used to be a world without garages, and then a sudden, huge demand for them.

I’ve sold Cooper Black an indulgence on this one. Ad’s just too much fun to pass up.
It is fairly well used here.

Yesterday’s haul. High quality, low quantity. I’ve moved from 1925 to 1929. The cigar ad is fun. It’s reduced here, but full sized it goes down an entire column, top to bottom.

This coke ad is a way-out-there design...
I’m going to use the main part of it, but I think if I used it as is, no one would buy that as an actual period ad. It’s like pop art.

Yessir! For socks. No elastic yet to keep them up, so you wore garters which used your calf to keep them up.
Men still wear garters. They clip between your shirt and socks, and keep your shirt from riding up. I’ve been trying to sell my partner on these for the live act. He can jump around and his shirt will stay put.
His big objection is it coming loose from the sock and the elastic shooting the clip into his balls.
Edit: I’d bet money Macron is wearing them here.

Shirt garters are not uncommon in military uniforms. Dressier stuff, not field uniforms.
For the silhouette you want to portray, the slacks have to be pretty un-tight, which means every time you move, you untuck the shirt. Of course the neater you look in any situation, the better, so if the shirt comes out of the waistband a bit, you want it to go back as neatly as possible.
This is where shirt garters help a lot. They’re attached to your socks and the front and rear tails of your shirt, spaced as equally around the bottom of the shirt as possible. So when you sit and the back comes up out of the pants a little, the garter smoothly pulls it back down for neatness. And when you reach up or over and the front comes out, the garter slides it back in.

Best bet for that is custom made shirts with lots of extra length. iTailor is very reasonable for bespoke shirts, except they don't combine shipping which is irritating as hell.

My solution is to keep my shirt untucked.
Though my shirts are also extra long so I’m still draped when bending over (Duluth Trading clothes FTW... they used to call the shirts I wear “no crack”).

I can only imagine the dreamy conditions of an "airy, sun-lit factory" in the teens. Sounds like heaven.

I should look into this, too. Though I haven't needed to wear a dress shirt daily since I ditched the office job a couple years ago.

This is generally my strategy, though an untucked shirt presents a slightly different image from one that's tucked in. It usually doesn't matter for me, but when it does, it does.

That ad is just red flags all over the place.
Which might be why I picked it.

If I need to present as tucked, it’s a suit or bust. My only other pants are jeans.

Is "Shitfaced" a term Americans use now or did you appropriate it from a Brit? Or maybe an Australian/Kiwi/South African?

That Gold Medal flour ad is really striking and effective, especially compared to the overly wordy novelettes that so many ads of the era embrace.

Yeah, it gets to the meat of the issue without having a paragraph of exposition justifying the product’s existence.
If ya gotta use that many words to tell me what the product is and why I want it, your advertising-fu is pretty weak.

I’d definitely say whoever designed it was taking their cues from posters of the era instead of newspapers, and did a bang-up job of translating the medium.
To be fair to the others, I’m sure a lot of it came down to money.
That, and well... everybody thinks they know how to write ad copy.

“Everybody thinks they know how to write.” And except for some small area of expertise, most people are quite wrong. This is especially true of ad copy.
Edit to fix stupid capitalization problem.

But what smarmy ad copy can you put about FLOUR? How do you spin that? OURS DOESN'T HAVE WEEVILS?
I have been to the Heileman Factory in Wisconsin. They have giant silos outside painted like a 6pack of Old-Style.

Chicago has a thing with Old Style going way back (as the ad attests).
I forget the exact details, but somewhat along the lines of that Commonwealth Edison ad, Old Style would provide signage for your bar... with a big Old Style logo on it. These we’re (and still are) everywhere. Other brands did it too, but for whatever reason they were never nearly as successful as Old Style.
