edit: Weird - I pasted in the broken heart emoji and it...broke?

The trick seems to be the forum software can handle it from the “advanced” editing page, but not the embedded one.

Was that you showing that the emoji can work, or was it you expressing your emotions regarding the functionality of the embedded editor?

Thanks all.
We've had our five-year-old granddaughter here for the week, while mommy and daddy are at the hospital. Thankfully, she's gone to preschool all week, too, LOL.

I let her play around with the Audiokit Synth One app on my iPad this morning, and she really got the hang of it, on a five-year-old level, of course. It was pretty fun watching her noodle around on a synth, learning the controls, how to bend waveforms, etc.

It was actually quiet and peaceful. I took care of the immediate irritation of the light from it by pulling the plug.

Finally, finally finally tracked down the problem with my dad’s Wi-Fi. It was the switch I had it plugged into.

Ethernet switch.

What threw me is even though the Wi-Fi was behaving like it was broken I was still getting 50 down, so I didn’t trust my feeling it was broken.

Turns out no one told me my dad’s work laid down some fiber for him. As soon as I yanked the switch I started getting 400 down.

Even when the solution is something that "doesn't make sense", it's a big boost when you "solve" a PITA challenge. Congrats.

I'm guessing it was a 100Mbit switch (or worse, a hub). Maybe with a Gb upstream port. That would explain the 50-100 throughput.

Almost positive it’s a gigabit switch. I can confirm in a few hours.

It’s quite possible the switch is fine, but the AirPorts didn’t like the configuration of it sitting in between. Now I have the new AirPort piped directly into the old one.

At my place, I have switches sitting between all my AirPorts, and everything works fine.

Just discovered I can do a RAM swap on my iMac without melting its face off.

P.S., I keep forgetting to check that switch when I’m at my dad’s. It’ll end up back at my place sooner or later.

I’m generally not a big fan of metal, but I recently discovered this trend of female metal bands coming out of Japan and, holy shit, these bands shred.

Band-Maid, for instance. Seriously hard, and they perform in stylized maid costumes (which is kind of a very Japanese thing to do)

I'm enjoying the TikTok Extreme - Play With Me solo challenge. A song and solo I've loved ever since I heard it on the soundtrack of the first Bill & Ted film but thought no-one else remembered/knew.

Another minor pleasure: Kasë Krakauers. So much yum.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

I’m always felt a little bad (but not too bad) Extreme was popular because of their wuss songs.

Same with Queensrÿche.

My wife and I spent the day hiking in a park we hadn’t visited in 40 years. It was wonderful, if a bit wistful.

Back then, it was a private thing, and you paid the land owner (at a real “pay here” booth and everything) to traipse around his land. Which happened to be the location of a very singular geological feature called Hamilton Pool.

It’s now a Travis County Park, which it has been since 1990. This is important because the county has the resources to preserve the fragile ecosystem around the pool, and the creek that feeds it and flows out of it.

This hike was, for us, a “major pleasure.” But the “minor pleasure” part was that in spite of issues I’ve had since August with my replaced hip, I was able to do a fairly stout (if not super long) hike without ANY problem at all. It’s at the top end of the “minor pleasure” scale for me, but every little bit helps.

Tanker truck in front of me seemed to randomly turn on their hazards. I was like WTF, when I suddenly saw the road ahead was covered in some type of insulating foam explosion.

I didn’t see it because the truck was in the way, so props to the trucker for the warning.

I'm not sure whether it's required, but drivers here will generally switch on their hazards on the highway when they see a traffic jam or hazard up ahead, to warn those behind.

Reasons I was taught to flash high beams
At oncoming traffic:
  • their lights are off and should be on
  • speed trap ahead
  • road hazard ahead

Following someone:
  • if they are going abysmally slow in the wrong lane and you need to pass
  • when you see something wrong with their car (flat tire, dragging muffler, etc)

You forgot the biggest reason.
• Their high beams are blinding you - they forgot to switch to lows as they got close.

This actually constitutes coercion in German law and is a finable offence.

I love the idea, but nobody has ever obliged in daytime, and think it’s a dick move at night.

My guess is people in Germany are much better at not sitting in the fast lane than in America.

Germans have a LOT more formal driving training than ‘Mericans. And there’s this cultural thing about Germans…ya know, “rules.” They sort of follow them.

And IIRC, it costs a large number of marks to take the driving training and/or formal test, so if one has put the time, effort and money into getting that license, one might drive in a way so as not to lose said license, or get fined, or etc.

Here in Texas, driver training isn’t taught in schools. Not at all, since driving isn’t on the standardized tests. I’m NOT making this up. And mom and dad can “homeschool” driver training. Really. So it looks like the idea is to reinforce all of the parents’ bad habits, and produce even crappier drivers.

We looked at that for our son, and enrolled him in a formal driving school. He’s a pretty darn good driver - and not just because the bar separating “super crappy” and “not technically a road hazard” is awfully low.

Glenn, that’s terrifying.

Getting a license here costs in excess of 2000€, currently.

Above 80 km/h, you are legally required to use the rightmost available lane.
Yes, that’s an actual thing here.
Endangering others by failing to do so is an 80€ fine and one point in the registry (8 points is loss of license).

If you cause an accident, it’s 100€.

Spheric, it’s terrifying to me, too.

Not only do most drivers (around here) have little knowledge or respect for physics, they lack anything like common courtesy. (By my observations) they leave the house late, expect everybody to get out of their way, weave in and out of traffic, then take their exit (if they notice) only to queue up to get into the parking lot they “need to be in.” Using what they clearly think is “the only way into the lot.”

It makes a person wonder who velcros their shoes for them…or monitors their meds.

In MA, drivers ed is not required if you are 18+, but it does give you the insurance discount which is a pretty good incentive.

Was feeling charitable and gave them a day, but my patience has worn out and I sicced the pigs on the car half-blocking my driveway. It’s just been ticketed, and now the owner gets to race a tow truck.

An Apple keyboard case, or a third party case? I’m using a Zagg Rugged Messenger case (it’s retired now), and I can’t imagine staying entirely with the iPad’s on-screen keyboard.

I only have lag when the keyboard has to “wake up.” I’m typing on mine right now, and it really feels like it’s a wired keyboard.

I DID have some issues with lag and stuttering keys a while back. It took deleting the Bluetooth entry for the keyboard, REBOOTING (really Apple?) then re-adding the keyboard. It was the reboot part that made the whole issue a huge pain. Who’d have thunk, right?
