Greetings!

I have a Mid-2011 27 Inch iMac. 3.2 i7. Latest version of Mac OS.

The screen randomly goes white and then either needs a restart, or restarts itself.

Does this mean our graphics card has gone to hell? Is it something else?

GPU or power supply. Try turning the screen brightness way down, and see if the white-out incidents decrease. If they do decrease, that would point to the power supply.

Do you hear a lot of fan noise, compared to when it was newer? If the fan and vents are plugged up, overheating could cause it too. Look for some air currents coming out of the exhaust vents. A temperature monitoring utility would help too.

I'll give those a try.

I kind of figured it was the GPU, as that make and model is known for having GPU issues. Apple even had an extended replacement plan because of it. We're just outside that window now.
