Hello
I have been reading the Mhz myth topic on this forum , and I realised that G4's cannot compare with top PC proccesors.
Then I saw Apple saying that the 733 G4 is around 50% faster than the 1.4Mhz pentium .
Where is the truth?

It all depends on the app.

In Photoshop, a G4 will win.
In Q3A, a P4 will win.

But, more apps are optimized for P4's than G4's, so...

That barefeats dude is biased. A lot of people suspect he tinkered with the benchmarks to make the G4 "faster." I wouldn't trust him.

It's all in the AltiVec.

Greece barely has computers?
No way , We are loaded beyond any limit. Every ignorant here has a computer. (PC's ofcourse) .
Here only professional graphic designers and musicians have Apples.
I feel a little alone but nevermind...

Graeme Devine of Id software is currently optimizing Quake 3 for Altivec. Based on preliminary results, he says that Altivec "safely" puts Macs ahead of PCs. Take that how you will, but I suspect that once optimized for Altivec, Quake will run better on a mac, and Macs will soon be coveted gaming machiens.

The same could be said for "ANY" benchmark. Rob Art Morgan at least has the ethics to retract benchmarks that seem off once he's found the flaw. One could easily argue that a P4 running at 1.4Ghz should NEVER lose to a G4 running at a "measly" 733Mhz. I think this aptly illustrates the point that the speed advantages are minute enough to make the decision of which platform to go with rest with what OS and apps a person needs to run more critical.

Hello
Pentium 4 is not so fastafter all , it has problems .Software has to be optimized for it in order to show its power. As the market is dominated by PCs , I am sure many software designers will please intel.
The 1.2Mhz Athlon is fast and I think Apple must do better than a 733Mhz
proccesor.
Hey Greek Mac users!
We should do a fun club or something in order to make Machintosh more accepted in Greece .

Whether the Barefeats benchmarks are valid or not, pay attention to the systems he's testing.

This is from memory: the mac has 256MB of RAM and the Pentiums 128MB. Granted, Windows doesn't do well with large amounts of RAM (read this somewhere, forget where) but it still should be a factor.

G4 still rules in my book! Pentium four needs a small nuclear reactor to give it the power it goobles!

Look at things this way... On most things the Pentium 4 is actually slower than a 1.2GHz Athlon Thunderbird or even a 1GHz Pentium in most tasks. Only Quake III did it beat out in anything. Now you may say, the G4 dosen't have that many fully compatable apps either, esspecally with multiprocessing... Mac OS X client will offer full support for both except within the Classic enviroment. So all Cocoa/Carbon apps will be a hell of a lot faster than a Pentium 4. So unless you're just going to be using your computer for Quake III, get a G4.
