Looking at it from a big picture perspective, Trump has maintained a rather stable-but-low ~43 % approval rating according to 538, but that was during a period with good economic data. Despite that, the GOP got a bloody nose in the mid-terms. If the economy is really taking a turn for the worse, and I mean if the economic downturn must be felt by his supporters, I think this is it for him. The GOP's wall against impeachment proceedings will crumble, not necessarily because they agree with the “official” reasons, but because keeping Trump in power is getting dangerous for them (as it diminishes their chances to get re-elected). If I were the Democrats, I'd look more closely at Trump's business dealings starting January, e. g. subpoenaing his tax records, and see if he and his family are in violation of the Emoluments Clause.

Regarding the Wall, Trump has really played his cards like a drunken gambler who is down on his luck and on his last shirt. He insisted on a shutdown for something that the GOP couldn't muster the votes for for two years. Two years. Then President Trump took gleefully responsibility for the shutdown on TV (giving Chuck Schumer an ear-to-ear grin). I can only imagine the expletives that Mitch McConnell uttered when he saw that.

A belated thought. Why should Congress give Trump money for the Wall? Trump promised Mexico would pay for the Wall. So why spend billions of US tax dollars on it?

Instead of shutting down the US government over the holidays, perhaps Trump should travel to Mexico City. Open negotiations for a payment schedule.

Well, here we go. It appears I-1 is going to simultaneously approve the new spending bill and declare a national emergency today.

This dude is just asking for a constitutional crisis. All I know is if the conservative majority SCOTUS backs him on this then the GOP better not ever twist their lips to complain about "executive overreach" again. SMH

What is the probability of that happening? The GOP still insists it is the party of financial responsibility.

It's tempting to talk about tax cuts when we're in debt. But I'm curious why they think they're still the financially responsible party. I haven't heard Reps make that claim lately, so I'm not clear on their reasoning today. I was expecting the GOP to quietly drop the "financially responsible" plank.

People don't understand taxes. They were thrilled when their withholding changed so they got more each paycheck ($5 is another cup of coffee!) but are mad their refund is smaller. Trump didn't give the middle and lower classes anything. He robbed Peter to pay Paul.

You can be sure that this is brought out when the GOP disses the Democrats’s health care and tax policies (“Do you want a 70 % tax rate!?!”). Although tax-and-spend is still financially more sensible than not-tax-but-still-spend.

When do politicians ever NOT rob Peter to pay Paul ?
That’s how the hole social security system works.

Same discussion about any other government benefits and services.
Let’s not forget that government doesn’t have money - it’s all “robbed” via taxation or inflation.

Paying taxes ≠ being robbed.
Unless you want to live in anarchy, you need to support a state. In any case being financially responsible means that the state has enough income to pay for its expenses. Cutting the income side of the equation but doing nothing about the expenses or, in some sectors, increasing them, is financially irresponsible.

But you guys - billionaires have paid other billionaires to convince me that taxes on billionaires is robbery. So I will fight for the cause of those billionaires that are only billionaires because they were provided with physical safety from constant robbery through basic law and order, access to an educated workforce via primary, secondary, and post-secondary schools, access to cheap food through government subsidized farming, access to cheap energy through government subsidized and regulated oil, gas, coal, and renewable energy, uninhibited access to telecommunications through government regulated telecom services, and like...roads are important too?

Everyone thinks that in some kind of anarcho-capitalist paradise they'd be Immortan Joe. Best case they'd be Nux.

And these "true patriots" that "love America" have no problem clamoring all over some crazy socialist nutjob idea like no-cost college because why should my own hard-earned dollars be wasting on sending lazy people to college??

[T]he tax which will be paid for this purpose [education] is not more than the thousandth part of what will be paid to kings, priests and nobles who will rise up among us if we leave the people in ignorance.
Whatever wacko that said this believes that if we don't fund education, wealth will concentrate to just a few people that will in turn milk the general populace dry, to an amount much greater than the taxes required to fund education in the first place. Crazy socialist pipe dream, that.

I really hope not.

Though now I'm tempted bulk buy some really tiny ones, paint 'Trump' on them with Lead-based gold paint and sell them described as "Uuuuge" for a silly price.

So, Greenland welcomes its new insect overlord?

At least the lucky Danes are spared a Trump visit as the baby leader throws his toys out of the pram at not being allowed to buy endlessrareearthmineralsland, I mean Greenland, and cancels his visit.

Every cloud...

I'm not clear why Trump got interested in Greenland. Because he got the itch to do a big real estate deal? Rare earth minerals is not something I've heard him interested in before, so that seems doubtful.

Maybe someone should tell him it's mostly covered in ice. And has an economy only ~2% of Puerto Rico's.

So, the acting head of Customs and Border Protection said Monday that refugees from the Bahamas were welcome under Temporary Protected Status in the US. Trump then contradicted them and declared that Bahamian refugees would not be welcome here. Apparently, “very bad people” might get in.

The "very bad people" already got in. Some even got into government. This shouldn't be a concern.

Just use the supplies & space set aside for Alabama hurricane refugees.

It’s being reported that Trump plans on revoking California’s EPA emissions waiver that allows the state to establish its own vehicle standards.

This guy is nothing but an angry, vindictive child.

Anyone else doubting Trumps “mocking” of Greta Thunberg.

It seems wildly out of character. In that it’s vaguely ironic. Slightly smart and not in your face bullying.

To me it seems more like he simply entirely forgotten who she was and wheeled out what he thought of as a nice generic platitude.

Here’s the full text of a letter Trump sent to Erdogan last week. The White House confirmed it as legit.
Dear Mr. President:

Let’s work out a good deal! You don’t want to be responsible for slaughtering thousands of people, and I don’t want to be responsible for destroying the Turkish economy—and I will. I’ve already given you a little sample with respect to Pastor Brunson.

I have worked hard to resolve some of your problems. Don’t let the world down. You can make a great deal. General Mazloum is willing to negotiate with you, and he is willing to make concessions that they never would have made in the past. I am confidentially enclosing his letter to me, just received.

History will look upon you favorably if you get this the right and humane way. It will look upon you forever as the devil if good things don’t happen. Don’t be a tough guy. Don’t be a fool!

I will call you later.
I like the “I will call you later.” Like they’re besties or something.

Handing out the letter in meetings shows a shaky (at best) understanding of the phrase "confidentially enclosing"

Still, at least he is a super stable genius, so he has that going for him.

Yup, and I think more and more Republicans are seeing that there is a real world cost to sticking to Trump. Up until now, most of them think that “this is just words and doesn't impact actual politics”. Now Trump's rash behavior is getting more and more important as there are fewer and fewer “adults” left in the White House that would temper the President's impulses. You know it is bad when John Bolton of all people is the sanest person in the room.

While I think this will soften the Republicans's resolve to go to the mat for Trump and make it harder for Trump to coordinate his strategy on how to deal with the impeachment inquiry, we should not count on that yet. I think a lot of them will just hope to run out the clock. Many of Trump's non-fans in the GOP are in fact retiring, and the people who will replace them are probably trying to align themselves with Trump.

But at least initially, IMHO that will mean less and less representatives will go to the mat for him.

While addressing fans in Pittsburgh, Trump gave an update on the Wall.
And we’re building a wall on the border of New Mexico, and we’re building a wall in Colorado. We’re building a beautiful wall. A big one that really works, that you can’t get over, that you can’t get under.”
Trouble is, Colorado is not currently a border state. Trump would have to sell New Mexico to Old Mexico, for the above statement to be true.

In perhaps unrelated news, Trump has directed federal agencies to not renew newspaper subscriptions to The Washington Post and The New York Times. Let the subs run out.
Trump has repeatedly attacked the media, labelled reporting as fake news, and said the New York Times and the Washington Post “treat me terribly”.
That'll teach 'em not to print Trump quotes.

Sadly, it's pretty common for Americans to believe New Mexico is part of Mexico. New Mexico magazine actually has a section where people relate stories of dealing with others who think so.
