Not sure if this best suited for this forum or the GUI forum.

Is there a way or has someone developed an app where you can have the Dock apps listed under a separate menu on the Apple Menu Bar? Something that would allow you to have the Dock hidden permanently and just select apps from a drop-down or cascading menu?

This doesn't address your question directly, but have you tried Quicksilver? No need for the menubar to launch applications.

Running apps in a menu? ASM. 15 bucks.

Menu for launching apps? TigerLaunch. Free.

Personally, I also highly recommend Quicksilver for the latter, but whatever floats yer boat.

Or try Butler, which does things like Quicksilver and lets you create menu in the menubar, control iTunes, have multiple clipboards, wash your car and buy flowers for your girlfriend on Valentine's Day.

If you prefer no nonsense, raw speed, you could also try Launchbar instead of either Quicksilver or Butler. The latter two offer more functions, but Launchbar has a smarter and way way faster search/launch engine.

DockBlock

* Active apps listed in the menu bar - check
* Disable the Dock - check

It is less refined than ASM but *can* disable the Dock unlike ASM. It is shareware, but it works as advertised.

cheers

Fruitmenu from unsanity.com. Works fine.

There is a way to get Butler to pretty much emulate the dock in a menu item.

The first thing to do is add all the permanent items that you want in the menu - Finder, Safari, Mail etc. in a container in the menubar section of the config.

Next add a running applications smart item directly underneath. This item works just like ASM and list all the running apps in alphabetical order.

Now you need to get rid of the permanent items from the running applications list so that they don't show up twice. You do this by adding Finder, Safari, Mail etc. to the exclude list of teh Running apps item.

It's not perfect since the non-permanent items aren't listed in the order that they were launched, but it is pretty close.

It's such a pity that Fruit menu can't do this as that's the ideal place for this item.

Best description of Butler I think I've seen yet
