For a while now I have been looking around for a new email account as mine has been getting spammed out with Gmail though I don't really hand it out to many online sites, it still got out there to be spammed.

Anyways, been looking around and have not really found many good alternatives to the "Free Web Based Email". Found gmx.com but still in beta and still lots of tweaking left.

I've been using hotmail since 2000. Unfortunately, the httpmail plug-in for Mail doesn't work anymore.

Gmail. Decisive factors are SSL/TLS, IMAP IDLE, and a huge storage capacity.

Gmail, especially since they started offering IMAP. It's now my primary Email address (out of 6).

Gmail. There is no better free IMAP email out there IMO. I have it running in Mail.app, it works great. I get very little spam...

Gmail. Works well with Apple Mail, my iPod Touch. The web based access can also stay in sync with both when using IMAP .

I do NOT like Yahoo mail. You have to pay a fee to get it to work with your built in Mac email account!

I use Gmail by way of Google Apps for my domain. It's the best webmail I've used by a landslide. It has perfect multibyte character support, IMAP, huge storage space, a lightweight version for mobile clients (my cell phone), and is free.

GMail. Aside from the fact that every so often emails lose their header information in Mail while using IMAP, I love it.

I set it up for a few friends using Google Apps for My Domain, and I wholeheartedly agree with the recommendations it’s getting here; having free IMAP is a killer USP to my mind. However, the fact that you cannot get rid of the Gmail folder really bugs me. It’s the one improvement I would make to the whole thing.

Are you talking about the [Gmail] folder that appears in Mail clients?

If so, you need to add [Gmail] as the root folder, then it'll go away.

I don't use any.

While I have a hotmail account, I ignore it and haven't used that in long time.

I had a hotmail account as well and totally forgot about it. I just recently tried to log into it and they had canceled it.

I prefer Gmail, it's pretty good! I still use Hotmail, but most of the time I forget to check it

If only it could be connected to the Mail application.. oh well, I mostly get spam there anyway hehe (although also crucial mail, so I have to use it grr)
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

Gmail, and Yahoo! mail. While I can't use Mail or Entourage or whatever to download my Yahoo! mail, it's handy because of all the other stuff like chat that my family uses.

I also have something like three accounts through "Mail.com" that I use for registering with places I plan to ignore.

GMX.com might be in beta but it has been around for decades.
My vote goes for G-Mail though.

Oh yes, I forgot that I am also using the Google Apps version of Gmail. My own domain, and lots of storage / IMAP and I don't have to worry if I switch Web hosts.

This should've been a poll, only so we can have a visual representation of just how much Gmail is winning by.

I'm really impressed with how big Gmail has gotten in such a short time. When Google first announced the invitation-only beta program, I thought "there are already so many free email providers that are so entrenched (Hotmail and Yahoo! mostly); this will probably be a niche service forever, or get cancelled." But here we are, years later, and it's grabbed huge mindshare and hopefully helped Jabber make inroads into the IM world enough that eventually it will be as democratized as email is.

Way to go, Google!

"...Don't be a loser. Be bop a lula, I got my Gmail..."

YouTube - I Got My Gmail

The story how this animated music video got featured on Gmail's login page...

This started as a swap on gmailswap.com where I wrote and performed a song in exchange for a gmail account. (This is when gmail just started and accounts were harder to get). In exchange for a gmail account I would a write and record a song in the choice of the person's style and tempo. Oh, and their name in the song too.

A person took my swap: alt. rock @ 130 bpm. It came out great so I modified the words to be more general. I sent to google and they wrote back telling they loved it, even asked for the lyrics.

Then my friend Amanda at pandaproductions.com made this cool Sims2 machinima out of the song. I sent it along to my new friend at google.

Then on US Thanksgiving, Gmail featured the video on the Gmail login page which put the video on to Google's most viewed video list! So here you go: an original machinima music video!
I love the song and the video.

Gmail.

A breezy (and perhaps inaccurate) count of the responses is 28 Gmail.

If you signed up for hotmail a long time ago, you were grandfathered for WebDAV mail client access without paying extra. I'm pretty sure a new account cannot be accessed except thru the web interface, or paying. I don't know what the cut-off date was, but Wikipedia says it was in 2004.

I'm using the free version. My only complaint at this point is that the For Domains version of Gmail doesn't seem to have as good a mobile version. When viewing on my cell phone it's much, much slower than the regular Gmail's mobile version.
