Hi

I'm looking around for info about sharing files between my Macbook (10.5) and G5 desktop (10.4). Both are accessing the web through the same router (the G5 over ethernet and the MB with Airport) - is there a simple way to swap files?

The guidance I've found seems to be for more advanced situations - sharing with FTP and over the web, etc. I guess I want some kind of home network. Just something a little more elegant than the old USB stick swapping...

Thanks

You can simply use File Sharing (System Preferences->Sharing).

Cool. That was easy. Thanks. I was expecting to just see the Drop Box, but I can access everything on the desktop machine.

But who does this allow access to? I was asked to type in a password, but I use the same one for both machines, so I'm not sure which I'm being asked for. Obviously, I wouldn't want just anyone on the wireless network accessing my files...

You can access everything because you are an administrator on the machine - using the admin user/pwd. It shows you everything. If you log on as a guest, you should see only the public folder.

Your wifi network - is it encrypted, and with what level (WEP, WPA?)

Ah, so it was the password for the 'target' machine. That makes sense.

Yes, I have some basic WPA encryption on the wfi network.

Thanks

WPA is good. If you have a strong password and haven't given it out, you don't have to worry about anyone snooping on your file sharing.
