Sorry to hear about Roxy. I think the one big drawback about pets is that they don't live long enough and it hurts so much when they die. I lost my two cats within 11 months and it was almost more than I could bear.

Maybe I'll get a tortoise next: they live something like 100-150 years

I work and work and work... and I would say my dachshund is around 90% with regards to potty training. She knows not to go on the carpet, but there is nothing like waking up to see a little pool of pee on the floor in the kitchen. We are to the point where she in on a regular cycle with an accident about once every week.

I've talked to trainers that have said that after YEARS of attention, they are still only around 95%.

If I piss my dog off, she WILL get back at me.

I once thought that, and bitched and complained when we first got her (eating shoes, crapping on the floor, wanting to go out all the time, etc.), but now, I wouldn't know what to do without her.

My favorite is anything from the pound. I have a real problem with people bringing more dogs into the world for their financial gain while hundreds (probably thousands) of perfectly wonderful pets are put to sleep every day because there aren't enough homes for all of them. My dog is a Dalmatian and Australian Cattle Dog mix who was adopted and returned to the local shelter 5 times before nearly outstaying her welcome. Fortunatley, she was adoped by a couple who's hobby is ACD rescue, and ended up finding her way into our home.

My cats are idiots. They'd die in 3 days outside.

The smartest and best dog I have ever had is probably my favorite breed mix. He is 1/2 Labrador Retriever and 1/2 Greyhound. He is better than most people I have ever met. It tear me up to think that in a decade or so he will be gone. He has the affection and intelligence of a greyhound, and the protectiveness and intelligence of a lab.

Plus, he's GREAT with children.

Just because Cats naturally crap in a box seems to make everyone think that they are smarter. I think there is something to be said for a dog that must be trained.

Also, in my defense, my dog is a pure breed. The twist is, she wasn't expected, so I took her off the breeders hands for a little less. Living in this apartment, I don't have the option to go to the pound as most around here are over 20 lbs. (our limit)

Springer Spaniel - best dog in the world in my opinion. Always friendly and good natured, good fun if a little tiresome and not too big!

Sadly my dog got put to sleep 2 years ago, but as soon as I have time/space/money etc I'll get another... Just like another member of the family, home still feels odd without them!

Yes, I've heard this too, and Mitchell's experience agrees with this. But my two were house-trained in a month, and never have accidents unless they're sick (almost never). My sister has 3 of them; 2 were no problem to train, but the third has accidents now and then when left alone. In other areas mine have been harder to train, because they're smart and stubborn, kind of like Jack Russell Terriers, but less extreme. They are VERY playful, energetic and affectionate; no dog is a better companion indoors and out than a dachsi. Are you planning to get a dog, Spliff? Your corgis are adorable; great pics! I've heard there is a corgi-dachshund cross called a "Dorgi" and the Queen of E has some.

You do realize they eat their own feces and the gods know what else.

I can't stand them because they ALWAYS stink no matter how much you clean them. Dogs have no concept of grooming themselves, except for the occasional licking ass or croch.

If you claim they don't stink it's because you've lived with them for too long.

I also can't stand any creature that trys to f*ck your leg. It's just disturbing.

And you're absolutely right about them being con artists. She's a little too smart for her own good, and has kind of a smartass attitude, but I love that dog more than any I've ever had! She is so clever about weighing risks to benefits, has amazing problem-solving skills, all that.
