I think the new AppleTV is great and $99 isn't bad but still even for that price, I like my current AppleTV. I figured if they put iOS on it I would upgrade but yet without it, I see no point to upgrade. Also, since there's no iOS on it I think it's more likely I can upgrade my AppleTV to the new software.
Does anyone know if it will be upgradable? Honestly even if I could get $100 for it on eBay I prefer having a hard drive. I like the netflix service but I already have a PS3 that i use for that and I'm not big on tv and movie rentals and mostly stream or store from iTunes now.

Also, a side note. Is is true the iPod Classic is still available? I was shocked when Steve Jobs said he's updating all ipods. I thought 'what can they do with the classic'. He didn't mention it then so I thought it was a goner but I still see it on Apple so is it not being cancelled? My iPod Video is getting old and I have an Iphone so the iPod Classic is my favorite iPod. if it was going away I was going to buy one today while I still can.

Well, that's a good question. If the current ATV is upgradeable, then yes, that would be awesome, with no need for the new one.

I think it should be possible theoretically, but I dunno if Apple will make it available.

The new iOS for ATV has no ability to address the HD and make purchases, so that part of your old ATV might become obsolete.

Steve didn't make a mention of a new OS for the Apple TV, just a new Apple TV. My initial guess is no update, and if there is an update, no Netflix.

Still there.

It sells slowly but constantly, and it's not costing Apple any money, so there's no real reason to kill it until the other iPods can reach the capacity.

Note: The classic's scrollwheel is a lot more fickle and fiddly than that of the iPod w/ video. (It's not just mine; they're all like that.)

I've never really liked it.

According to John Gruber the new apple tv does indeed run iOS now.

Time to jailbreak out AppleTVs.

However the hell that'll work.

No longer a hobby? $99 Apple TV drops storage, integrates Netflix
There will be no software update to bring the new features to older Apple TVs.

From wikipedia: "Though Boxee installs a Netflix Watch Instantly plugin, the Apple TV does not have enough processing-power to run the Silverlight framework that the Netflix plugin depends on."

Don't think they had a choice. It was three year old underpowered hardware to begin with.

How would a jailbreak of the old ATV help ? It's been done, there are patchsticks abound.

I, for one, don't like that I have to buy the new ATV, but I'm still doing it.

My old ATV will serve me well to heat a pot of water, to boil eggs or make spaghetti.

Have you ever bought any sort of tech at all? Stuff loses compatibility. No reason to get pissed off.

I have an old appleTV, basically use it to watch my podcasts on TV. I'm disappointed that it won't play Netflix too, but if you have

XBox360 (with Gold Membership)
Wii
PS3
Roku (cheaper than new AppleTV)
an P4 PC that you can put Boxee on

Then you can use that to stream netflix already. I know this isn't news to most, but it is a decent second choice for some, particularly on the game systems if you've been putting off getting one because you were afraid you wouldn't end up using it.

I use my 360 for Netflix much more than for gaming.

Alternate software for the AppleTV Classic has been around for a while. No need to "jail break" it.

Now, because they lowered the price.

I bought the Roku HD one month ago for $ 89.

Too bad for Roku, it's going to be returned.
For $ 10 more, I get much more functionality.

Seriously, even now, starting at $ 59, who would buy a Roku, when you get AppleTV for a few more bucks. Nobody. Roku is dead.

I've got that too, and an iPod touch running Air Speakers. but, when I've got a bunch of people over, I like to have synced music playing throughout the house and on the deck.

for me, the more AirTunes players the better.

Yeah, you're right. It could double as that. Graceful retirement, I guess

Anyone hoping for an old AppleTV software "upgrade" should divest themselves of those hopes. The old AppleTV used a low-end Intel processor, whereas this new AppleTV uses an ARM processor like Apple's iPlatform devices do. Completely different processors means no software upgrade, sorry.

Okay, but you didn't mention the underlying hardware incompatibility.

Because it was inconsequential. Doesn't matter if the hardware was compatible because it was still too underpowered.
