Effective immediately, electronics retailer Geeks.com is shutting down online ordering. In an email sent to customers today, the company is "turning off ordering on Geeks.com" and "will cease to sell and ship products immediately." The company is shutting down its online portal after 17 years of operation.

In the email sent, Geeks calls out Amazon as one of the reasons its online division isn't staying open. The company claims that "the e-commerce landscape, as well as the consumer electronics market, has changed dramatically with intense competition and a 1000lb gorilla (do we really need to say who) competitor that can lose millions of dollars to buy customers and suck up inventory. They can lose money with impunity, supported by the stock market. We cannot."

Both the company's wholesale division and retail store in Oceanside, CA are staying open. Existing orders will be completed, any credits due will be issued, and a small staff will remain to answer questions, to process returns, and to honor warranties that Geeks.com is responsible for.

They made the mistake of trying to compete with the big boys and drifting away from the stuff that made them unique. They used to have tons of small amounts of cheap odd closeout items. But the drifted more and more into higher end lease returns and such. Simply put there were already other places that did that well. Amazon didn't eat their lunch. Newegg and Tiger Direct did.
