I would like to use my iMac as a second display for my MacPro. My MacPro has a mini-display port, and I would like to know if that's a possibility.

Only the current 27" iMacs (October 2009 and later) support video input.

What's the big mystery? The tech specs clearly state "27-inch models also support input from external DisplayPort sources"

You'll need a cable with MiniDisplayPort connectors on each end or a pair of MDP-DisplayPort adapters and a DisplayPort cable. DVI, HDMI, or VGA cables with adapters will not work.

Why should he check the easy to understand tech specs when he can just ask you and me to do it for him?

I did what you recommended, I used a cable with the MiniDisplayPort connectors on each end, and it didn't work. I tried screen sharing but that was totally unworkable. What am I missing?

I wonder if you need the Apple blessed cable from Belkin. That would be lame.

Once again, a quick Google search turned up Apple's support document:

Using a 27-inch iMac as an external display

It looks pretty neat, actually. I always assumed the computer part of the iMac would be off but instead it's a full running Mac in the background. This could be a neat way to run a server and have an external display for a notebook at the same time.
