Hey guys, this is basically my first Mac (had a black MacBook previous to the one I just bought but it was stolen after a month). I just got my black MacBook 2.0 core2 duo and at the time of purchase (from CompUSA) I wanted to upgrade to 2gb of RAM. Well, the sold me some PC5400 Mac-Ready Centons for $199 a stick, so thats 398 for two sticks! I didn't know any better, just took the "Mac" guy's advice on the memory. After reading into it and looking at the Mac's site, theyre selling the PC5300 for their macbooks, so I'm assuming those sticks are fine to use right? They are half the cost and I'm not going to waste an extra $200 if there's no difference. Thanks in advance for any input.

I think there is a diff between 5300 and 5400. I have no clue when it comes to software, but I would just play it safe and buy the kind that Apple says the MacBook uses, and not the kind CompUSA says is Mac-ready.

You could have bought the regular Centon memory from CompUSA for about $50 less per stick.

No, there isn't. DDR2-667Mhz comes out to 5333.33333MBps; the majority of the industry agreed to call that PC2-5300, while a few brands (mostly those targeted at the "leet crowd with windows and fluorescent lights") decided to one-up everyone else and call it PC2-5400.

I also stopped off at CompUSA to get memory, and they didn't have the $100 1 GB Centon, so I got a PNY 1 GB for $170...
...but it didn't seem right, so I stopped at Best Buy (which I usually refuse to do) and checked out memory prices there. I got the exact same PNY memory for $100 each...so I got two and returned the one to CompUSA, noting explicitly on the return form that I got the memory for about $70 cheaper at Best Buy.

Oo. Ok. Thanks (I don't really know much about RAM, either ways).

I see that now...I went over last Saturday (January 20) and the Centon was $100, the PNY was $170. The sales guy told me flat out that he didn't have any of the $100 memory cards. I think if I had gone to Best Buy an hour later, they would have been out too--I took two of the last three on the shelf.
I looked this morning, and the Centon is $150, and the PNY is $100.
In any case, I got the memory for $100 per GB.

Good deal! I went there on Saturday and they had tons of Centons, I think they might of re-stocked. Either way, those are great deals if you're impatient and don't wanna way days for it to come in the mail.
