While installing gnome I get this message:

Failed: Internal error: node for system-xfree86 already exists

This is at the very start of the process. I'm using Apple X11.

You need to install one of the virtual packages for xfree in order for it to work correctly with X11. I'm not on a mac right now but I'll check tomorrow when i get back to my iBook.

I get the same error trying to install gtk+2. First it asks if I want:

(1) pango1-xft1-dev: I18N text handling system: for XFree86 (<< 4.3)
(2) pango1-xft2-dev: I18N text handling system: for XFree86 (>= 4.3)

With the default answer (and the right answer) being #1. However, when I choose #1, it says:
"Failed: Internal error: node for system-xfree86 already exists"

Indeed, I have system-xfree86 installed. And since I am using X11 I have XFree86 4.2.1.

i got gnome working last night for about 30 minutes using apple's x11.

i had to install fink first, then add one component of x, then add gnome, all using fink commander.

also had to alter ~/.xinitrc file, now however it doesn't work. there is a great webpage i can post the link for later if anyone wants it.

i think i'm going to erase the whole apple x11 bit, and restart using the version from fink, from scratch...

don't really know yet what is safe to erase.... or what must be erased.

I installed X11 and th developer tools at different times

When it came to using fink with X11 I just installed the placeholder for xfree, its in the fink list as "system-xfree86"

That should help you install Gnome.

ShotgunEd: Any idea about GTK+2 then? Since system-xfree86 is already installed?

Whats your specific problem? GTK+2 installed fine for me although i may have got it with apt-get rather than compiled it.

How did you solve the problem with I described in my first post? Or did you not get it? Are you using XDarwin or X11?

UPDATE: Nevermind. Someone showed me the solution. There is some kind of multiple dependencies error in Fink. http://www.mail-archive.com/fink-beg.../msg07157.html

I had this exact same problem but was able to correct. My problem was that I had unstable packages enabled through Fink Commander, and some upgrade had gone bad. Once I unchecked "Enable unstable packages" and "enable unstable crypto", I reindexed and did a "fink update-all" and the xfree86 messages were gone.

There is an excellent X11 for MacOSX and Darwin documentation resource
here. To solve the problem you describe, I had to remove system-xfree86 with
Code:
sudo dpkg --remove --force-depends system-xfree8
in the Termminal. Then re-install the system-xfree86 placeholder package.

You need also the X11 Software Developer Kit, which you can get on the X11 download page at the bottom right corner. I had this exact same problem till I installed this, and now I've got KDE running great.

Also known as the "SDK" for those who don't know.

http://a1408.g.akamai.net/5/1408/138...bf2/X11SDK.dmg

And if that link doesn't work, just go to http://www.apple.com/macosx/x11/download/ And click the SDK download link in the bottom right hand corner.
