I am thinking about getting a new Powermac but the need is not desperate and I could wait awhile. What do people think of the various options:
(1) dual 1 gig now
(2) wait for G5
I am tempted to wait and then I am thinking that the first machine
with a new design and new chip is not necessarily the best to go for.
What do people think the wait will be for a G5 ?
Thanks - Michael

Be prepared for a long wait if you decide to go the G5 route. My guess is it won't be ready until mid 2003. Apple has already said the G4 has a long way to go still.

If you can...you can always wait. If you can buy... buy. The DP is hella fast.

But they didn't say in the tower. It does have a long life left in it with the new iMac, PowerBook, and someday the iBook.

If urgent : Buy G4 and upgrade to G5 when time comes ...
If not urgent : Wait until MacWorld Expo and see if there is any annoucement ...

.....and if there's still no G5, go for whatever is there by that time (G4/1.3 or 1.4 or 1.5 or whatever).

I think this is like wondering if you should buy a new Lincoln now or hold out for a flying car.

i dunno guys ... technology keeps changing and you have to make a decision to get in the game at some point. you have to find that point (based on money, product announcements, etc.) and just make the jump.
you're going with apple, so it is kind of a no lose situation.

Wait until after MacWorld. If you believe the rumor sites (such as http://www.spymac.com and others), many industry insiders think that Apple will release the G5 at MacWorld.
Evidence of this is the fact that the iMac just moved up to a G4, and at 800MHz it's very close to G4 mini-tower performance. Moving the mini-tower to the G5 will differentiate the consumer/professional Mac lines once more.
